but the colour doesn't seem to have come out. does it get lighter with time or will it stay like this :(
Is there anything I can do to it to make it lighter (other than dyeing it again, that is) anything that won't dry out my hair - home remedies? Thanks

Hi as a Salon Owner stylist and Colourist, you have not done much wrong and it is very simple and cheap to sort your hair out, You need to go to a Sally's Hair Store or a very good chemist and buy a Toner for the finished colour you wanted to achieve when you started on this
whatever you do, do not bleach your hair again or you will certainly over process it, the toner will give you the colour and the condition without any bleaching agents
your hair will be stunning for Christmas believe me

If you have naturally dark hair like me you will find it harder to lighten it using ordinary, home hair colourants. The bleach they contain is just not strong enough to lift the natural pigment in your hair.

If you really want to lighten your hair you should go to a salon and have it done professionally. Trying to do it yourself, especially using bleach, will just damage your hair.

In order to go a much lighter colour you would need to have your hair lightened using bleach and then the light brown put on top of that. It can be damaging although a professional hairstylist will know how to do it properly with the minimum amount of damage to your hair.

I wouldn't dye it again as the hair can only handle so much chemical treatments before it will be dry and brittle. You can use baby shampoo to lighten it faster without harming your hair. Baby shampoo may be non-tear formula but its pretty harsh as far as shampoo goes. The color will fade in a couple months with regular washing also.
Good Luck!

i have really dark brown hair, and dyed it light brown, first time i did it, i wasnt disappointed with the turn out as it wasnt really that light, i did it again after a few days, and it just got lighter with time, after a week or two it was as light as i wanted, but had to redye it. i think it depends on your hair dye as well, nice and easy is really good.x

Sometimes the color adjusts for a few days. I wouldn't put anything in it. But if you do decide to re-color it, condition it like crazy for at least a week so you don't dry your hair out too much and break it off. And also condition it a lot afterwards too for at least 2 weeks (only wash it every few days though, no more than 3x/week). Good luck!

You can try John Frieda Color Glaze in a lighter color. Its a condionter and it should make it lighter. That worked for me after I dyed my hair.

From your pic you look like your quite dark in your hair and skin tone like me. So all I can advise is to avoid trying to go lighter because it's harder for dark hair to take unless you resort to bleaching which I wouldn't advise

This happened to me, and as a male, I have less hair =|

I dyed it blonde, and it didnt really work properly.
So I got a 'TONER' of the colour I wanted, and Capiche, it was all done and dusted =]

Try a Toner my love.

All the best,
Alex.

I'd say go out in the sun, but knowing that you're in the UK, you'll be lucky to see any any time soon. You could try dyeing it again and see if that helps.
