H&R Block produces TaxCut, and they are fighting to take market share from TurboTax. Also, the core of the program is already written for the software Block uses in their offices, so the development cost doesn't have to be covered by software sales. To reinforce what the others have said, the local paper did a comparison last year. TurboTax was a little easier to use, but TaxCut was better at getting the lowest tax.

When H&R Block bought TaxCut, they cut the price way back, in order to gain market share. They also changed it quite a bit as I understand it, to make it more user-friendly. I think that's been about 3 years ago. There are some advantages to TaxCut, including access to tax professionals and the ability to transfer all your stuff to an office where you can finish up if you get stuck. But, I've never used Turbo Tax, so I can't make a difinitive comparison. But the reason it is cheaper is simply to gain market share. Most people will buy the cheaper software as long as it is comparable in quality.

TurboTax has a much higher market share than Tax Cut, pure and simple. For some taxpayers, TurboTax has a somewhat more user friendly interface and is often preferred by the inexperienced taxpayer for that reason. On balance, Tax Cut makes it much easier to override the program's calculations and this is valuable for experienced taxpayers especially if you don't agree with Tax Cut's interpretation of the law.
If you're a basic W-2 filer with little extra income and only the usual itemized deductions, buy on price; both will work well for you. If you are renting out real estate, sold rental property, or have complex capital gains issues, go with TurboTax as it can handle those much more easily than Tax Cut can.

Supply and demand. I have used both programs and find Turbo Tax easier. Since more people prefer to use it, Intuit can charge a small percent more than Taxcut. The features on both programs are similar onthe basic level.

Make sure you're comparing BASIC editions of each. There are lots of options with both products. Each product also has a discounted fee for filing online.
