Ignorance in this case is taught. It comes from propaganda and the falsifying of knowledge taught.
That is why so many children give up being Christian once they leave home. You can tell children fairy tales about father Christmas and they will believe, sometimes into their teens and then gain the knowledge to know it is untrue.
The only difference with religion is that living with the parents continual propaganda makes it hard for them to break away from the religion.
