I prefer red onions sliced very thin, but another alternative is green onions. The green onions have a more subtle taste.

I don't think I've ever had a pasta salad with onion. I personally don't like onion but that wouldn't stop me from eating your dish, I'd just avoid eating the onion bits. Since pasta salad includes things like pepper and tomatoes, which are notorious for not being liked by picky eaters, throwing in some onion shouldn't hurt.

I would say no onions- a lot of people don't like them. If your friends/family do, I would recommend green onions. Or you can also use red onion for color. Just dice it up small and rinse under some water so it's not as strong.

This sounds really good without onions. Not everyone will like the onions. You can put some onion powder or onion salt for the flavor.

This is my suggestion. Add one or two tomatoes to your recipe with the onions, and peppers into a saucepan. Bring it to a boil and cook for about five minutes. You don't need to add water because there is enough water in the tomatoes. I do this all the time and it tastes even better! (No one will even notice that there are onions.)

I've made something similar and used very finely minced red onion. Or you could use the greener parts of green onions. Those shouldn't be too harsh. And I agree, add black olives.

If you want onions, I'd recommend either Vidalia sweet onions if you insist on fresh, or (I personally use) reconstituted dried onions. Fresh onion has a way of overpowering the recipe, especially the longer it sits.

Raw onions upset my stomach, but in a potato or pasta salad, they are missed. So I take the garlic press and press onion juice. It's messier than pressing garlic, but it adds flavor.
