Microwave ovens are cheaper because they use electricity for a shorter time. Making heat takes the largest amount of electricity in or homes. Cooling is second. Microwaves are generated by a magnetron in the microwave oven, and the heat is generated in the food itself. The small radio waves cause the water molecules to vibrate faster, and temperature is the average kinetic energy of the molecules, or how much they are moving.

Gas is cheaper...however it would depend on how much and what you are cooking.

If you are cooking a small item it could be getting close to break even going towards gas being more expensive. The oven has to warm for 10-15 minutes, then cook the food twice as long as the microwave.

The microwave will cook small to medium items in as little as half the time.

I will leave the math to you. To many variables.....

Power consumption of microwave in watts, estimated time to cook item/items and cost per KWh in your area.
Size of oven, warm up time, time to cook item/items and cost of a therm of gas.
