I am Pagan and we celebrate Yule instead of Christmas. Should I "come out" to my family at the big holiday dinner we have?

I think that some of you may have misunderstood the question.
I am not gay and "coming out" -- I am Pagan and am asking should I tell my family (also referred to as 'coming out of the broom closet').
:)

Think of a Jewish person declaring that they are now Christians on Passover.

To me, if you did it at the "big holiday dinner," it might be perceived as trying to bring attention to yourself. If you're Pagan, then you're Pagan now, Pagan then, and Pagan after. Why wait? Tell them now, and see if they might be more sensitive towards you at the dinner.

There are four possibilities:
1) They are cool with it and you spring it on them at dinner. They're still going to be a little surprised, and it will be awkward at least for a little bit. You might be perceived as a drama queen based on the timing.
2) They are cool with it and you tell them now. They will probably try to incorporate your views and beliefs into the big holiday dinner.
3) They aren't cool with it and you spring it on them at dinner. Dinner will be a disaster.
4) They aren't cool with it and you tell them now. It's awkward but they have time to come to terms with your beliefs a little bit before the dinner.

Overall, I think the consequences of telling them at dinner are worse than the consequences of telling them now, even in the worst case.

Depends on what you predict their reaction to be. If they are devoutly religious, or if some members are, I would start by letting them see that you are not taking Christianity as seriously as they are. Maybe next year, after they've gotten used to that, tell them about what you do believe. Give them time to adjust.

If, on the other hand, there is no-one in the family who is that kind of devout, or at least no-one you would rather not shock and annoy, then by all means, drop your bomb. I can just see my Aunt . . . well, no, I can't really. Been to long since I've seen any of them.

you should do it after ,,ask them if they really love you , then when you get a yes ...come out , if they think ur crazy and they reject you well they should accept you the way you are bcoz apparently they told you they 'really really loved you"....so yeah..

i did it with my family and they werent shocked or anything , a bit surprised and confused but they ok...

now if any of that wont work you should tell them "well at least im not gonna get pregnant"....

haha! have a happy yule !!

=)

Why spoil the gathering. You can be celebrating what you want in your heart and they can be celebrating Jesus Birth. God knows all anyway, that is what matters.

If you feel they must know what until Jan or so. Bad news at the holidays makes for bad memories.

I think this would be the worst time to come out. I would suggest doing it after the holidays.

It isn't the best time to do it. I would just wait until after the Holidays.

Why ruin their holiday? Bring it up at Valentine's Day.

Let them Celebrate and don't ruin it for them. That would be mean... Let them have Christmas and then tell them gently.

No. Why? So that you can be guilty of "shoving your beliefs down people's throats" just like the Christians do?
