It depends on the boy's wealth. To some people $12,000 for an engagement ring may seem like a lot and to others it might be no big deal. I agree with Planet 80's though, and a ring should not be based on price, but sentiment. Just because a guy buys you an expensive ring, does not mean that you are going to have a fantastic marriage.

It doesn't matter what the cost of the ring is. Most women have a specific style of ring they want. My ring is a 3 stone blue topaz with diamond accents that we found on sale at 70% off. The original price was less than $500 to begin with. I looked a long time for the perfect ring as I wanted something less common and didnt want the usual diamond. I think women who get a mind set of needing an expensive ring in order for him to show his love is ridiculous and they have no idea what love truly is.

The cost of the ring is totally irrelevant, people normally buy according to their budget. Couples often buy a new ring later on in life as the first engagement ring might not quite match up with a ladies status 10 or 20 years down the line.

If he saved that much money especially for the ring, then I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Great quality rings can sometimes cost a little more money than some rings. Now if he just took out a loan to pay for it then maybe that's too much, but again if he has been saving for it, then there no problem with that.

I think It doesn't matter about how much you spend on an engagement ring, when you are in love, that shouldn't be the focus.

I think that if you're going to ask a woman to marry you, then you should have already discussed important issues such as finance. Buying the ring is one thing, but the marriage after it is more important to me. My fiance' and I discussed the ring before we bought it and we both know what our budget can accommodate and based it on that. I'd hope the couple in question is more about the relationship than the price tag.

It's too much. I think the boy spent all his money just to make the girl to say yes. I mean, who on earth would turn down a 12 grand ring when the someone asks the question?

Personally, I would only spend about 1-3 grand on a ring. but that's just me. for 12 grand, you could have gotten a car, or a down payment on a house or something.

...

EDIT: Never read that you asked for a ladies opinion only. Sorry.

I would have shot my husband if he had paid that kind of money for my engagement ring! That is an outrageous price for an engagement ring. All I can say is I would never want a ring of that value on my finger. I would be afraid that I would get mugged. Anyone that spends that kind of money on a ring doesn't know or understand the value of money or just doesn't care about it.

I think it's utterly ridiculous to pay that much for a ring. Mine was probably $100, and I noticed it's shine and everything else is lasting longer than most of the expensive ones.

You said a BOY was giving the ring, not a man, which makes me think the kid went in big time debt for this ring. That's a very baaaadddd omen.

It depends on your income and where you live but for a 1 carat good quality diamond- it's about average.
My ring was more then that.... the diamond alone is worth more the 12,000 Gs- I know because I have to have this rock insured!

Funny- I am not afraid to lose my ring like others are saying because it's insured and My ring is 1 carat center 1/2 side stone and my wedding band is another full carat. I wear it everywhere and never have been bother or target for a robbery. I don't think people know if stones are real or not so their not going to waste their time on stealing jewerly.

I love my ring! And we already own a house and two new cars and have no credit card dept. Really depends on you and what you can afford.

$12,000 is an ok price for an engagement ring. It's a little more than average. Just hope the quality is really good.
