The Borchardt C-93 was the first semi-automatic pistol to be made in sufficient numbers to be a commercial success. It was designed in 1893 and appeared publicly in 1894. It was studied by Georg Luger as the basis for his famous pistol in the late 1890's.

1896 is sticking in my brain as the year for the earliest Mauser semi-auto. Colt had one by 1903.
It's early in the morning (OK, it isn't, but I slept late), so I may be misremembering, but I think Humphrey Bogart carried a Colt 1903 "pocket pistol" in most of his movies. Not to say that has anything to do with this question.
