i believe it strengthens ur legs cause your forcing your legs to run in the sand and that builds muscle.

After reading all the replies you've already gotten, it's apparent that most people don't know.
Let me give you my opinion. Running shoes are made to provide support and protection for the feet, including cushioning and motion control. My guess is your best chance to get faster is to put in the miles wearing the most protection you can have.
Now about the running on the beach. Yes, your feet have to do more work, and you probably use some different muscles to negotiate and find grip and balance in the sand. But whether this translates into faster speed - I doubt it. Chances are when you recover from the additional irritation from the sand, plus the cuts from broken sea shells, you aren't likely to have gained much that could translate into getting from point A to point B any quicker. At least not so much so as to supplant the qualities of a great training plan.
Hope this little trek thru logicland helps.

Both.
After running in the sand, running on regular ground will seem like a breeze.

The sand slows you down. If you want to run fast, jump on the tread and set it for 12 MPH. :D

Yes, cause it takes more force to move the sand back as you run. Do it in your barefeet and it removes hard callus skin to, exspecialy if its hot sand!.

since it's so hard to run on sand....it does strengthin your legs. it's a good work out and it's actually good to run on sand, dirt or grass. it avoids injuries. especially shin splints!!!!!!!

i think you would be crazy or some sort of pervert to go running on the beach, supposedly all running creates muscle but to strengthen it would be sheer crazyness, and no it wouldn't make you run faster because humans can only run or sprint at 20 miles an hourand only for very short periods of time.
P.S Baywatch was never sexy anyone who knew who pamela anderson was knew where she had been if you catch my drift.
