Ok, I'm not sure if that's a lot of weight but everyone who see's my cat says, "wow,,she's a little fatty, isn't she" So, as far as her getting any heavier I'd like to nip it in the butt now. She eats Iams food, is she too young for diet Iams? I've cut down on her snacks too. A LOT. Anyway, I would just like someone to fill me in on diet Iams for a young cat. Oh,,,and for the most part she carries most of her weight in her belly if that means anything. (first time cat owner)

You should have started your "nippinjg" about five lbs. ago. Most female cats have a weight range between 6-9 lbs.

Go to http://www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Feline Obesity" and other articles on feline nutrition such as, "What Cats Should Eat", "Why Cats Need Canned Food", "The Right Weight Loss Program for Cats",etc.

Also at: http://www.thepetcenter.com there is an excellent article on feline obesity and the right diet to keep your cat in good shape.

That little belly she has is called a fat pouch. A lot of indoor cats get it because they have been fixed and they're not as active anymore. Cats vary in weight and size depending on the breed, but you can tell a cat is overweight by feeling their sides. You should be able to feel the sides of their ribs (not too much but you should be able to feel them) 14 lbs is probably overweight for the cat. You might have to start feeding her by portion control. Giver her limited access to food. Feeding her twice a day and measuring out how much she needs. Low fat diets may work too, the only thing is that they might want to eat more of it because its not as satisfying. So portion control is your best bet for now - and keep her as active as you can - i know a lot of cats can be lazy - so try as many toys as you can, you'll find something that she likes. A cat is considered adult when she reaches 1 year so any adult diet is good for her. Just make sure you read the ingredients. Science diet is vet recommended and one of the best you can get for a cat... Ask your vet, or a store person to recommend one for you.

Yes, that is pretty heavy. The 1st person to reply is right. Toys for her her to chase are awesome, and cutting down on the treat will be great, too. As far as food concerns go, some brands make a cat food just for weight control other than iams. Ask your vet what he/she thinks. You don't need to make an appointment, just call. She is well over a year old, so diet food won't stunt her any.

I never could get a cat to eat Iams. But if that's what your cat likes, go for it!
