It was necessary. The Sino-Indian border which is known as McMohan Line was never officially recognized by the Chinese Govt. We have already faced an aggression from China in 1962. Boder dispute is still going on between India and China with China continues to claim a part of Arunachal Pradesh as their territory and the LAC (Line of Actual Control) dispute at Ladakh-Aksai Chin, is still undecided.

Secondly, China has already built massive millitary infrastructure near McMohan Line inside Tibet and deployed large number of troops and amunitions there. Chinese missiles are capable to hit the main cities of India. We also can't forget that Chinese Navy is trying make in-roads in Bay of Bengal through Mynmar and China still supports few terrorist groups in Noth-eastern India.

If they are Indian troops perhaps it's to block the fleeing of terrorists involved in the Jamu-Kashmir dispute or it might be to assist Pakistan and India both to trap some terrorists who are in the area. Forget the public displays of animosity between nations on the subcontinent and in South Asia. There's a lot more cooperation going on then is evident in the news dispatches.
