Is your monitor an LCD or a CRT? What OS are you using? Why are you asking?

LCD monitors (digital) aren't the same as CRT monitors (analog). Use ONLY the "Native Resolution AND Screen Refresh Rate" as specified on the manufacturer's web site for your LCD monitor (60Hz).

Find them, then, right-click on the Desktop and choose Properties to open the Display Properties Window. In Display Properties > Settings TAB, set the correct "Native" resolution, then click on the Advanced Button, then the Monitor Tab to set the correct Screen Refresh Rate.

Also, make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card.

If CRT and Windows, "multiple desktops" can be difficult, but you can create alternate hardware configurations. Linux and OS X are easy.

The answer will be different if you do Web Design as opposed to Gaming, for example.

Please re-post with the above info and we can try to help.
