China is much more 'ungreen' than the USA, but yet we don't have Mr. Gore banging his fists on the table about China. The rest of the world should be outraged, but I don't hear anything about it. Why is the USA the bad guy? It is clearly China!

Hey Ken, is the Inconvenient Truth available in chinese, or with chinese sub-titles. I read the article, still seems to me Gore is targeting the US more than China....

China has farther to go than the USA...

its because Al Gore was probably paid by Chinese government to destroy the U.S.economy by silencing the U.S.factories whom he think are the polluters so that the Chinese manufacturers has the freehand in making just about anything that any closed U.S.factories are making before, thats why he is focussing on the American continent and not Asia cause Asians are probably paying him a lot of money to have some if not all US companies closed

Although China is not the front runner in endowment protection, but USA is the biggest carbon emission contributor in the world. Please check the source in the link provided.

Despite what you think of China, it is one of the countries who signed and ratified Kyoto Protocol. Which means China has already agreed on cutting carbon emission together with basically all the global communities (except USA which is the biggest polluter)

Climate Change is real, it is not a political game. You can't just labelled some countries you don't like as polluters, because the fact is just there for everyone to see. everyone living in this planet is affected. And developed countries must take the lead.

No one says USA is the bad guy but American's action particularly in Bush administration is simply frustrated the rest of the world when it comes to climate change issues.

If you are smart and a responsible American and would like the rest of the world respect you as they should, then this kind of comment should be avoided

For starters, Al Gore is an American so he has much more influence over American policy than Chinese policy.

On top of that, the USA is responsible for much more of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than China. We've been emitting tons of them for over a century, and this helped us become a rich nation. China is still developing, and they have every right to expect the developed countries to take the lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Besides which, China has a far larger population than the USA. In terms of per capita emissions, the USA is absolutely terrible - far worse than China. We need to take the lead on this issue, not expect other countries to clean up our mess.

The US is still the bad guy and is the world's number one emitter of greenhouse gases. China is probably the number one emitter of CO2* but US emissions of other greenhouse gases far exceed those of China.

China also has more than 4 times the population of the US. It would take at least a five fold increase in China's greenhouse gas emissions to equal those of the US on a per capita basis.

Much of the growth in Chinese greenhouse gas emissions has been caused by us, we've exported our dirty manufacturing and industry to China to capitalise on the lower production costs. If we want China to reduce it's emissions the solution is simple - bring the dirty industries back home. We don't want to do that as we prefer the benefits of cheaper Chinese imports - we've created a problem, want to retain the benefits, don't want to be part of the solution and are pointing the finger of blame at someone else when we're the main culprits.

China has published an environmental policy, they make it clear that they are willing to 'clean up their act' but that to do so means adopting cleaner Western style manufacturing and industrial processes which would increase production costs. If we would guarantee them continued trade at higher prices they would clean up their act but we're not willing to offer any such guarantees.

* We can't say for certain that China is the number one producer of CO2 as they rarely publish official figures, it had appeared that at some point in 2007 they would overtake the US but it hadn't been expected that US emissions would jump by as much as they did.

President Roosevelt was trying to pressure Hitler. Just look at how much of an effect it had on Hitler’s plans. There isn’t anyway Big Al is going to influence China. China will agree heartily then like Hitler they’ll do it their way. Big Al and ex-vice president and Nobel Peace Prize winner ain’t going to influence China. They don’t care who wins the Nobel Peace Prize he isn’t going to run their country.

US should lead not follow the Chinese in the effort to reduce greenhouse effect gases. The Chinese know they have a major pollution problem. I believe that they are smarter than many provincial-minded Americans think. From an ethical and ecological pt of view we owe it to ourselves to begin addressing the problem constructively.

The way to lead is to be the change that we want others to emulate.(Ghandi?)

Besides we import so much from them now we are one of the reasons they do pollute and build more coal plants!! Blaming your brother for your bad behaviors is so immature, Don't you think? It's no excuse in my ethics or logic rulebooks!

It's true that China causes a lot of problems, including Los Angeles smog. But what can Al Gore do? This is a country that killed hundreds (some say thousands) of students for standing up to them at Tiananmen Square.

China's and India's carbon footprints are harmless. Only the USA causes global warming. The CO2 from other countries is a different, and harmless, type.

You're right, Al Gore should pressure China, but he needs to get the US's attention first (china wont listen to him only) and then persuade the US to pressure China. But I completely agree with you!

He is, of course. As are others . Doing it publicly would be silly, in that country.

Actually China is starting to come around. It's dawned on them that bankrupting their customers with global warming will not be good for business.

Expect them to seek a competitive advantage at the negotiations, but they're hardly ignorant enough about global warming not to want to strike a deal. Bush would be the same, except he's decided to shove this off on the next President.
