DOS is the original microsoft pc interface that was built for IBM pcs. It is a simple command line interface.

The early versions of Windows were built on this DOS layer and were more of a GUI. Each succeeding version has limited your access to this DOS layer more and more.

The bad boys in Redmond have since decided to limit more and more your access to this DOS layer which is so helpful to those who know DOS.

The Windows Command Prompt allows you to use some DOS commands but I believe they just emulate the DOS rather than provide an actual window to the DOS layer.

They are both the same but when you are running DOS from within windows, then you are running it IN a window and not directly and that can cause problems with some programs or limit their use.
