The purpose of every war is power.
This power could be political, unity, natural resources, ect.
The winner of the war gets one of these things, by military force, or other means.

War is politics by other means.
Force is a tool of governments to influence other governments. Just the threat of force is often all it takes to influence others. If another government is doing something we want stopped we can say do this "or else" well at that point War is the "or else".
It helps for me to think of governments like big civilized street gangs. They use their tools to save face and gain turf.
For the other part of the question:
The key in war is to cease or deny use of critical points to the enemy.
If he needs to use a bridge, cell phone tower, phone line, road, TV station, or anything else to maintain power than we have many tools to Isolate him without destroying them, but destroying them is also an option. If he can not communicate with, supply or move his troops they are worthless to protect him and can be avoided.
Once he is Isolated you can sometimes get him to admit defeat, if not you can just roll up and take out his crippled force.

I noticed the American wars in the past have been completely none of their business, using the lives of american soldiers. Including the current one.
Please explain how retaliating against an attack made to us turned into a political government replacement program where we're responsible for that governments infrastructure and the lives of ours soldiers are the price we pay.
Honestly, you KNOW the reason for this current war has nothing to do with acting out of the kindness of Bush's heart and doing what's right.
To answer the question....
THE POINT OF WAR is to get what you want. Period.

The point of war is to reach your objective. In WW2, Japan wanted to take over the world. Hitler gave them a vehicle to attempt to do so. It didn't work out for them, because Japan poked the bear.

the point is to try to make the other guy do what you think is right. You kill each other, then when one finally gets tired of it you quit& the winner reaps the spoils, which usually means, nothing!

War is an aggressive way of trying to get your own way. It's usually done by mindless twits who can't discuss things rationally because they're too dumb to express themselves properly.

The point of war =greed!! You've pretty much summed it up. To me it isn't a very mature way to solve problems!! You would think that the Government should use their brains to solve problems and issues, but instead they use and pay other people to fight their battles, how sad is that!!! The Government dosen't have to battle in the war, they just create it!!
