Is it possible to hijack a tank from a british army base and drive it buy yourself and park it in your garage. Would they notice if one of their tanks is missing. How would the local poppulation react if they see me stopping at MacDonalds in a tank?

I reckon you could do it.
They don't have keys for the ignition but you might find the hatches padlocked, so take a pair of bolt cutters. It should be full of fuel and you can drive one by yourself but on the downside you wont get any ammo for it.
Give it a week until most of the Army are on leave. Your biggest problem is going to get it of the camp without being noticed. You need a bit of a head start for maximum mayhem.
How big is your garage? You will definitely get it on a McDonald's car park, you will find cars aren't much of an obstacle. Rule out the drive thru though. It wont fit and you wouldn't be able to reach the little window from the drivers seat.
Why don't you go for an aircraft instead? The controls are pretty much identical to the ones on flight sims. You have more chance of evading the police in a chopper like an Apache.

The total is around 400 (The Strategic Balance;IISS 2008) Largely Challenger II. The UK is expected to meet targets for arms reduction; so many useable tanks such as Challenger Mk1 or even the excellent Chieftain MkV may have been scrapped. I cannot find any reference to sales of older British tanks to foreign countries; even though somewhere like Pakistan would give their eye-teeth to get hold of Mk V Chieftains - they would beat the Indian T72s hands down and could be pretty lethal against the latest generation of tanks if supplemented with the various facets of bolt-on armour that are available these days. My own feeling is that Chieftain MkVs and Challengers are lurking in some warehouse with a bolt through their gun barrels to render them immediately unuseable, thus satisfying the Arms Control people. But then, what use are tanks in today's battlefield? A contentious question which I, as an ex RNXS cook, cannot answer.

1. No. Security at army bases is provided by armed guards and frequently backed up by guard dogs. Nothing quite like a nice Alsatian hanging off your arm to slow you down. That;s not including monitored security cameras along perimeters, movement alarms on fences topped with razor wire, and a particularly touchy attitude to intruders on military sites.
2. No. Have you seen the size of them? You'd need a bloody massive garage.
3. Yes, they'd notice. The Army isn't so big they wouldn't miss a MBT.
4. By calling the cops and the Army. You wouldn't last long.

You need to get on base first, which requires proper identification. And don't even think about jumping the barbed fences, if your caught... it won't be light sentencing, and that's if it's not shoo ton site. Even if you did somehow get to a tank, you don't know how to drive the thing. Then I doubt it has fuel in it. It may require some type of key. And the last guy who got ahold of an armored car was in the US, I don't think it was military, but point is when the police got the chance, they killed him. So assuming ALL those other things which in your case is impossible, don't expect to leave it alive.

When I served in Osnabruck, West Germany, one drunk soldier did take an APC for a Joyride, needless to say that was the end of his military career after a substantial time spent in CTC Colchester

First of all mate I wish you luck in obtaining your object of desire....

Whats to be scared of? Its ONLY an Army base.

But anyway, they are heavy on fuel, and might not fit through the golden arches at your local drive through.

Don't expect chicks to dig it either, they only friends you'll attract will likely have a large 'Jane' colllection already.

The Army stores all its equipment in very secure areas, and have guards patrolling the perimeter. With the alert out for terrorists, just don't think about it!!

You would stand a very good chance of winding up dead, as the authorities would take no chances with someone setaling a sixty-ton armored vehicle...assuming you were able to get your hands on one in the first place.
