By not mastering it but understanding it. We are only able to control so much. Wait until your next case of diarrhea and see how much control you have. If you have a good inventory of your mind and body you can make decisions based on reality and get far better results.

By quietening both body and mind so that the larger and higher takes charge and control both! If both are active, mind with thoughts and thoughts and the body driven incessantly by the senses, they can not allow the higher intelligence to enter and lift us. Once the higher reality seeps into us, the mind and body become sharp, focused and yet restful and move with ease!

By witnessing and understanding them - their working, strengths, limitation and removing our identification with them!
For example when we meditate upon mind, we will find that mind always tries to judge and conclude. Then it tries to categorize the experience either good or bad. If good, it creates identification with it, which is known as likes or lust. When "likes" are obstructed, it generates anger. On the other hand, bad experience are categorized as dislikes. Then these likes (desire) and dislikes further tries to consolidate itself. Mind needs false assurance that likes should be repeated and dislikes should be avoided, which never happens in the real World - and this lead to confusion, stress, tension and so on... And when you see all this, you become separate from your mind. When you are separate then you can always control and master your mind.

By indulging in yoga and meditation. These activities strike perfect balance between mind and body. The 2 variants compliment each other gracefully.

The "how" is through lengthy and dedicated meditation.
In the West, we tend to not realize that the MIND is what determines ones thoughts, and how one responds to life. Ones MIND is the administrator of ones thoughts, thinking, and actions. Ones MIND is the administrator of ones Fate Karma. Now, if one does not believe in any of this... how can one begin to "master" ones MIND, or body?
If the reader is truly interested in "mastering" his/her MIND, then I suggest some research at http://www.geocities.com/minderid/
Focusing the Attn Aspect of ones Apapsyche "within" oneself withdraws ones consciousness from the world and begins the seeking within. As this progresses, one begins to discover subtle higher realities and truths than what one previously could imagine. But be aware that ones MIND will seek to discourage one with continuous thoughts fed to the Left-Hemisphere of ones brain suggesting that one is too tired, too busy, too sleepy, or picturing what one is going to do tomorrow, today, or what one did yesterday.
It is the job of the MIND to prevent one from discovering it, or what it hides within itself. To accomplish this, ones MIND keeps ones Attn Aspect of Apapsyche pretty much fixed in the L-H of ones brain and in thinking about things external to oneself.
Peace
