PS3 games are region free, you can play PAL games and both NTSC regions on any console, however PS1/2 games and movies aren't, you won't be able to play australian PS1/2 games and movies, you'll be able to play only NTSC PS1/2 games and movies. You'll need a power converter too (500W is the best choice).
There are two NTSC regions: NTSC U/C (North America) and NTSC J (Japan, Asia).

No the PS2 video games have a area lock so which you wont have the skill to play them by fact ps2 develop into area locked meaning the PS3 won't know the PS2 interest purely area a million video games however the income of the PS3 is that PS3 video games are area loose so which you will import any PS3 interest from different countries and play them on your PS3

Although I haven't tried it or anything it probably wouldn't work because any console from any region will not play games from a different region without some from of unofficial modification due to region encryption. The only exception seems to be with some handheld systems.

Also if it helps I know that a Wii can only play Gamecube games from it's own region as well.

The different types of encryption are: NTSC-U (America), NTSC-J (Japan) and PAL (Australia, Europe and some parts of Asia)

The PS3 and PS3 games are region free, so there's no problem there.

You will have problems when it comes to the PSX/PS2 games, DVD movies, and Blu-ray movies. They're still region locked. I'm not sure where you plan on getting your PS3, but if I think it's US, you will have problems playing Australian PS2 games on a US PS3. PS2 games are still region locked, so it can only play on a PS2/PS3 that was made for that game's region.

if you output to an HD source it will work. 720P/1080i/1080P

NTSC or PAL only comes into play when considering SDTV resolutions.
