UNIX is the oldest and most secure operating system architecture present today. While the UNIX architecture is definitely more robust, secure and reliable than that of Windows, UNIX based operating systems have failed to keep pace with Windows because of Microsoft's better advertising policy and more user friendly interface of Windows. All Linux distributions, Solaris by Sun Microsystems, and Mac OSX by Apple are purely UNIX based operating systems.

I use everything, and I have since pretty much the beginning (unix is the only one that I cant say Ive used since its birth)
Everything has its pros and cons. Its best and worst uses. For ME I prefer Windows for my desktop, Mac for my portables, Linux for my servers at home, and unix at work.
Unix is old and stable and secure. It can handle hundreds of users and websites on less hardware than windows uses for one person. But mostly I prefer it for doing standard old internet things. Linux is better for a server if you want to play with new toys altho toys tend to hurt the stablity and security.
Windows as a server I tend to recommend to offices where the menus are handy. Where many people (such as customer support) will be making changes.

Linux/Unix is still used today in a lot of servers. Why is this important? Because servers, in order to keep the processing load down, need simple, small, interfaces. CLIs or Command Line Interfaces are the most effective method of achieving this. Now, does this mean that all versions of Linux/Unix are tiny and only CLIs, goodness no. Some versions of Linux/Unix look and feel similar to windows...until you drop to the CLI, then if you've never used a Linux based CLI (or DOS like environment) you wont recognize most of the commands and outputs. Even if you've seen microsoft dos, and can navigate effectively within it, Linux uses a whole seperate set of commands. You don't make files, you 'touch' files. '/' is a directory in itself. 'root' is god...You would be lost if you've never seen it.
