In various gaming news articles it's been said that developers haven't realy taken full advantage of the PS3's tech such as the cell chip. This may be due to tech issues, lack of time, market and financial pressures, release deadlines, etc. As a result many PS3 games are merely ports of XBox 360 games, and don't look quite as good as their 360 counterpart.

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/06/gamespot-xbox-360-games-look-better-than-ps3-ports-for-now/

I'm not a fanboy of either system, so PLEASE no fanboy or Sony vs. Microsoft debates. I like both the PS3 and Xbox 360, I like the PC too. It's just that I'd like to play games on various platforms depending on which takes advantage of each systems respective technology. Quick example - Xbox Live is a very good online service, PC great for multiplayer FPS, PS3 has cell chip.

So anyway, which PS3 games uniquely take advantage of the PS3 hardware? Will MGS4 showcase PS3 tech? Have developers only just started to make post of PS3 tech?

Thx.

The most obvious games would be the ones that's built in house from Sony Studios (First and second party games), games such as Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, Folkmore, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. If Sony's own studio doesn't know how to take advantage of the PS3's hardware, then Sony has a big problem. Heavenly Sword is a good example of Sony knowing it's own machine. The cell processor treats the enemies far away as a whole group, so they act the same way, as they approach closer, the AI splits them into different groups and treat them as one. Example, a group of enemies would go to the right and do certain things as a group, while other group would go to the left and do something different. Finally, when it's close enough, the AI treats each enemy individually. It's pretty obvious if you've played Heavenly Sword. Each character does their thing instead of standing around doing absolutely nothing.

The next one would be the games that are PS3 exclusives from 3rd party developers. Hideo Kojima pretty much knows all there is to know about the PS3 because he's a genius, and his Kojima Productions spent a lot of time getting to know the PS3. MGS4 will take advantage of the PS3, but it's not going to take advantage of 100% of the PS3. If the PS3 is anything like the PSX and PS2, it's going to take at least 5 years before developers even come close to getting 100% out of the PS3. And even if they think they squeezed every bit out of the PS3, they will probably find something new.

The last one would be the good 3rd party developers. Rockstar is a good company, so it will take full advantage of what they know about the PS3 for GTA IV.

This year's 3rd party games for the PS3 has mostly been inferior to the 360 version simply because 1. 3rd party developers haven't had the time to get to know the PS3. 2. Some of them got really lazy (EA and Madden 08). 3. A lot of games were ported over from the 360 to the PS3 in order to cash in on the PS3's launch. At launch, there are usually very few good games, so a lot of developers will just port games over hoping that those that are loyal to one console will buy the game because they don't have other games to choose from.

Xbox 360 games do seem to have better titles that sell a lot of copys. Look at Halo 3 for instance. Or Gears of War. Xbox 360 games also have larger fan bases. Also there are a lot more games on 360. A lot of ps3 games seem to copy 360 games. A short time after GOW came out Ps3 came out with there own little exclusive called Resistance which seemed to be some what of the same thing just set in World War II. This is a tough question because obviously an Xbox 360 fan will say Xbox 360 has the best games and a Ps3 fan will say Ps3 has the best games. I suggest you do some research and look at some game reviews.

Sony had a problem with devkits - they shipped them 2 months before PS3 release. Also, superior Cell processor uses technology too new for a lot of developers. By now, there aren't a lot of games, that use even a half of PS3's abilities. I'm not a PS3 fanboy, but I chose to go with Sony. Right now my console is waiting for a better times and collecting dust. I want smart games and I'm tired of more or less standard FPS and racing games. Can't wait for some RPGs, MGS 4, GTA IV, etc.
It's obvious, that it'll take some time for developers to understand Cell's powers. Meantime, weaker 360 is taking the market, because Microsoft is using simplier technologies, allowing them to write codes faster. It's processor isn't that complicated. I will buy 360, no doubt, but when they'll get rid of annoyng tech problems.
PS3 will have some good games, but in the future. The only reason I bought it really fast after the release - NTSC 60GB has the best hardware. 80% of my gaming time now is on PC.

many games are not written for a specific platform anyway. They tend to be written on PCs, with the various other platforms having specific routines for their particular handling of graphics and sound, and control differences. The PS3 suffered from delays in getting dev kits out, and the PS has always been a bit more tricky to program. the clue is to find a game that hasnt appeared on any other platform i guess.

The tech capabilities of the PS3 have yet to be exploited. Most of the games are ports from the much less advanced systems (ie. XBox).
