Because of the striations in the skin with stretch marks, if you tattoo with a solid color, the stretch marks can still show. If the stretch marks have an additional color problem, i.e., white stretch marks for instance, the tattoo can do well to cover them.

For the best possible result, pick something that is fairly "busy" in pattern and color - you will have a very good chance of the stretch marks being covered up very well.

Also, just the action of the needles in the skin can cause the stretch marks to flatten out some.

It depends on the stretch marks, really, as well as the type of tattoo. Most artists can do some pretty impressive stuff as coverup and they can be made to mostly/completely disappear, but again it depends.

The key is to find an artist you like and speak to them. They'll talk to you about designs and let you know your options.

Usually stretch marks down accept ink as well as normal skin. Yours may take the ink okay, but usually the tattoo is a lighter color on top of stretch marks. Basically what I'm telling you is, if you're trying to cover your stretch marks with a tattoo, it's not going to work all that great.
