What is the likely hood of Depo Provera causing PCOS?
When i was 16 years old, I always forgot to take my BC. So after discussing this with my parents, I thought the shot was the best option for me to go. After a year of shots, and an amazing weight gain, ( my activity level was the same, and my eating habits were to) I stopped the shots. My periods didn't return in the three month period like i was told they "should". They didn't surfice regulary and when it would it would be extremly heavy and painful. I was later diagnosed with PCOS. I often wondered if others had this problem after taking the shots. And If in your opinions, or even if there is some kind of evidence, Do you think there is a link between depo use and PCOS, or other infertility problems?

My mother didn't have PCOS neither did my grandmother, the only thing that runs in my family is cancer of uterus... I have spoke to many women who have had the depo shot and developed pcos a few years down the road. if something stops your period what is going to happen with the eggs? they are going to build up in the ovaries and cause cysts..

I hated the depo shot and I would NEVER EVER recomend it to anyone!

Yes, from what I have heard from women who have had bad expereinces, it can be the cause of a host of problems. Some ladies are okay, others are not with it. I have learned that black women have a harder time with BC methods, I don't know why, but they can react more easily and have worse side-effects, and sometimes the BC doesn't work, even when used according to directions. If you are black. you might want to do some research into that! One lady I know had constant bleeding, heavy spotting all month long, and crusty, painfully swollen nipples for three entire months after the shot. I would not go there! I'm not sure what causes the reaction, but I don't think it's a safe BC method for the majority of women. I'd try the NUVA Ring, easy, safe, once a month, and fairly cheap. I have been using it for two years, and no negative side effects and I am in my 40's, where it's a bit harder to find the right BC that is safe!

I too was on depo for 18 months. Once I stopped taking the shots, I had a very difficult time of getting pregnant (2 1/2 years) and 6 months after the birth of my second child, I had to have an emergency hysterectomy to remove both of my ovaries due to POC. This was very devistating as my husband and I wanted to have more children. Luckily, we were able to adopt twins 3 years after my surgery. Now, I'm worried about developing breast cancer.

Infertility i dont know but a fact that I `am still under going is when my fist baby was born and turned 3mths I was suggested by a doctor to inject DepoProvera as I did`nt wanted the second child so early. I was told one injection is a contraceptive for 3 months and after that normall periods but after three months of depo I suddenly got my heavy periods and it used to be like 10 days of periods after every 12 days and my weight was shooting up like anything I consulted another doctor and told her the whole story. She then educated me that among 100 depo provera ladies it is one or two to whom it does not suits.
I was that one among 100.I was then suggested a thyroid profile and got to know that because of DEPO PROVERA I`am now a hypo thyroid patient , since then I`am taking one pill daily in the morning and this gift will allways be with me throught my life.
So pls take care with depo and if the you are putting weight get a thyroid profile done.
Take Care.

It might. I've heard a lot of serious health risks are caused by depo provera (there are class action lawsuits that are opened because of this drug).
I feel that depo should be removed from being administered and be tested a lot more, as too many women have horrible issues with depo.
I was one of them. I'm on Kariva now and a LOT happier.

pcos is hereditary....the shots had nothing to do with your syndrome...talk with your dr. and he/she will tell you the same thing...or go to the pcos main site.
