You need to do a bit more work before getting some good answers to this question.

New York City's metropolitan area is the third largest in the world (I believe Tokoyo is first). It consists of numerous areas in and around rhe city that can be very diverse. In fact New York City (the 5 boroughs) is almost like a conglomeration of many small towns. Easch of these towns have their history and feel.

OK so what does this mean to you? Check apartments listings (Craiglist and many others online) in and around the city. When you find places that fit your budget and appear to be within the travel distance you would consider, then ask about those areas here.

People on these boards have lived and worked through the boroughs, New Jersey and Long Island and will offer up the details you seek.

Try the site Wired New York (see link below). They have a section devoted to moving to NYC and have addressed this question a myriad of times. I would be leery about apartment listings on Craigslist -- most ads are bait and switch, or are just gross misrepresentations of what is really being offered. I would work with a broker, if you can afford it. Also, depending on your situation, and if you need a place to stay in a hurry, try a hostel or Y. Women are luckier in this area - there are several women's residences available to them; I'm not sure about any such residences for men.

Hey bud

I think the word 'nice' is a relative one in this instance, parts of Maine are really nice, but then again parts of Brooklyn, and Queens are also quite nice and affordable, and as long as you can tolerate the constant ringing of police, ambulance or fire trucks you'll be ok, also the legalities of purchasing a house are slightly different also, but in the main you'll find that wherever you live will be quite vibrant and rich in cultural diversity. Well i hope what i have told you is of little help, so good luck on your pursuits.
