One of the reasons I'm thinking about not joining the Navy is the great possibility I'll be stuck on a ship and I'll go nuts from boredom. I'm wondering if it's allowed to bring a laptop on a ship to stay busy when your not doing your job?

Why not? Because the enemy can track a wireless connection to the satellite and pinpoint the location of a ship by it's source. I figured it would be a big no no, but thought I would ask anyway.

hoffm117, are you using the Navy's provided computers to access this LAN or are you allowed to use your own laptop to hardwire to the internet?

You can bring a personal computer but you will not be allowed to access the internet with it. The reason for this is that the ship has to monitor all internet and e-mail traffic to ensure that no sensitive information is transmitted. As for the WiFi, the ship has so many RADAR systems that you can't even pick p a hint of a cell phone signal. Having a personal computer will benefit you if you like gaming or watching movies, you will not have to argue with someone else about what to watch.

My husband is in the Navy and is currently deployed. He has limited access to the internet. He can get onto mypay, navy fed and into a ship e-mail system only. He said it is super slow and it isn't always up. You won't be able to access the internet with you laptop, and honestly probably don't want to take it, stuff gets stolen. Like my husbands new video ipod, gone.

My son in the Navy has a Laptop and he can bring it on his ship. He can't access the Internet with it while on the ship but he can watch movies, play games, listen to music, and such while on the ship.
While in his home port he has a room in the Barracks where he has cable internet that he can use and most Navy bases seem to have free wi-fi available for the sailors. He can use it on base to access the Navy Knowledge Online website.
BTW. My son can and does use his cell phone from the ship while in port, most of the guys do.

Yes you can take computers on ship, problem is when ship is out to sea there is no wifi to use it with. Bring games to play that don't require internet connection while underway. When you in homeport there are single sailor recreation places that have public wifi that you can tap into. Some bases have wifi to the barracks. Other than that, on ship the internet is hard wire and not public access.

Laptops are allowed onboard MOST ships, but it is up to the individual ship. As for internet connections, you won't be able to use your personal laptop to connect to the internet. The ships LAN will be your sole source for the internet, and it is closely monitored. In fact, there are several major sites that you will not be able to access, such as Myspace and your Yahoo mail. You can go to Yahoo itself, you just wont be able to login...

It depends on the ship. On a Submarine like me, we do not get the internet, but we do have an intranet. We can use Wireless for the intranet. But if you are going to a skimmer (surface ship) you may come under EMCON (Emissions Control) restrictions. Talk to your security maanger for specifics, he should know. However as it seems you are going to your first boat, what do you need a laptop for? Your first and only concern should be qualifications so you can be useful to your ship!
