How do you know he is imaginary, non believers could be in for a big shock.
To find out that god is not imaginary would mean you would have to believe in him, then you would know the answer to your question. However, then you would be a religious person believing in a god who some think is imaginary, wouldn't that be a turn around.
Have you ever had a feeling? Prove it, its just your word against that of others, maybe it was just imaginary? I mean a feeling not a reaction to say pain from a kick in the shins. How can you prove you have ever had a feeling. You may be just making it up, telling a lie to yourself, perhaps your self delusional. You may need help.
Opps, I think I just did it again, I always blow the 'turn the other cheek thing"
After thought. Does it matter?
After thought, don't pre-presume my own persuasion and beliefs by this answer. I just got a little carried away thats all. Touchy lot aren't you.

Because their religion tells them, via the 'programming' ie. brainwashing that they receive.
eg.
The Jehovah's Witness has a super efficient program they put their members through - while I have not been through it, my brother is going through it, and I notice the changes.
General Christianity of course, don't have such a rigid program/system that they use, but they are doing the same kind of thing. Exactly.
Even Muslims go through similar programming in their religion.
How else, would you believe in a God that is not there - who doesn't even talk back to you.
Their religion speaks back to them, on behalf of God - ALL THE TIME. RELIGION DOES THIS ALL THE TIME.
Just look at the Christian, etc slanted questions here in R&S - and note, how silly the questions are...
This is what religion does - bypass believers common sense, to believe in something, their common sense tells them - it does not exist. Because you can't see it, listen to it, touch it, feel it, etc etc. And there is no proof/evidence in this world to back it up. Religious text is not proof/evidence. Without such religious text, people would have a hard time believing in it (God).

It's a born-again christian who isn't afraid of dying. All the others, question what will happen. and have there doubts.
We believe in God because we do read the Bible. and we pray and when we asked Jesus into our lives there was a real peace in our hearts. I am thankfull during hard times I have a place I can go to and just say Lord I can't handle this on my own, I am tired of struggling I give this over to you, ( what ever the problem might be). All of you non believers on here make fun of those of us that have put our trust in God, you call us weak and close minded when the truth is it takes more guts to say Jesus I need you and I trust in you then it does to close your mind of to the idea of God. It is harder to let go of our own will and seek what God's will is then it is to do "your own thing".
So why do we believe in God and Jesus because. How can I not when God gave his son to us to be crucified and Jesus willingly took the punishment for sin that he did not have to pay.
How could I not, when I pray to him and seek guidence in things that are very painfull for me and he is always there to give comfort whether it is through his word or a friend calling to say a kind word or the peace that comes into my heart that only God can give. when choosing to forgive.
You go on with your doubts and your own way of trying to deal with things, and my geuss is that all of you non-believers will continue to have doubts and your what ifs, and many of you will continue to question is God really real or is there a heaven or hell, oh, you'll say out loud there is no god and there is no heaven or hell but in your own private thoughts there are those doubts, Guaranteed.
And I'll go on with the peace of knowing that one day I will be with the Lord in heaven. And I'll go on with the comfort and joy that only comes from the Lord. And in the end when it's all said and done it's not what I think or what you think. It's what God says will be.
So why do I believe in God and Jesus because I choose to.

It began out of fear of the unknown. Cavemen feared what they didn't understand, so blamed or gave credit to an upper being. A lot of people just haven't evolved enough to know that there isn't a god.

Some of you are hard-wired that way in your brains. A process of evolution; Dr. Steven Pinker speculates it was an area of the brain that fell into disuse early on in hominids and kept its value via belief.

Oh please Mary! Such a silly question.
Obviously, because we don't believe God is imaginary!
That's like asking an Atheist why they don't believe in the Incarnation of Christ.

My God is not imaginary. He touches me in the heart every time I speak to him. I am not imagining it. If your God is imaginary to you, you need to go down another path. All paths do not lead to God. Search for him and he will make himself known to you. In fact, he is not far off from each one of us if we search for him as we would a precious treasure.
