So I went to a dermatologist about 3 years to get some medicine to treat my acne. While I was there he noticed some freckles on my body that were really dark and odd shaped. He wanted to remove them to get them tested for cancer, the problem is I am deathly afraid of needles and as soon as he walked in the room with one I immediately left and have not returned. Today after getting out of the shower I noticed that I am starting to grow freckles all over my body. I mean alot of them. I fear that it is cancer but doubt it is. Is there anyway for me to check if it is cancer without using needles? Honestly, I will hyperventilate if I see a needle. Also, are there any signs of cancer that I should be aware of?

Go back to the dermatologist and have your entire body checked. If they find something they will schedule an appointment for biopsy or removal. I had a dermatologist remove nearly 75 spots and didn't bother with any type of med at all. She used scissors. Really . . for goodness sakes it's just a needle and if it saves your life . . it will be worth all the anquish and pain. There are far, far worse procedures than what you are worried about. Trust me. Dealing with metastatic cancer is worse. Keep cool. Keep your wits about you and be strong. That is how people survive cancer and other life threatening diseases.

You really should go back. I am not a fan off needles either (im 21) but over the last two years I have had more of them poked me that in the rest of my life and I have learnt to deal with the best I can. Local aneasthetic injections do sting a bit but once you are numb you won't feel anything else. Make sure the doctor knows you are scared and he will do his best to make it eaier for you. Make sure you don't see the needle and take slow deep breathes and remember to relax. I know it is easier said than done but it does help. The stinging lasts about 5 seconds but if you concentrate on breathing and relaxing it will be over before you know it.

Three years ago I went to see a GP about a freckle on my arm which had changed. He said it looks a bit sus, lets remove it, come back on Monday. I had to work so I cancelled.

Five months ago I finally got back in and that freckle was in fact a malignant melanoma requiring two surgeries and is now a massive chunk out of my arm.

One week ago they discovered an enlarged lymph node and now I'm waiting for a biopsy.

Compared to a what you may go through if any of them are bad, a needle is a walk in the park.

No, you can't check to know for sure if it's cancer without needles. The doc has to remove it in order to look at it under a microscope. Explain to the doctor your fear of needles. Ask him for a Valium, it'll help you relax. Of course, you can't drive when your taking a relaxer drug, so you may have to make another appointment to come back.

What is a needle when it comes to your health? Trust me, I am a big baby when it comes to needles but I am currently going through chemo. I just grit my teeth and do it.

Please, please, please DO NOT ignore this. It may be nothing, but you absolutely need to find out as quickly as possible. Ask your doctor for something to calm you down before he does any procedures....he can give you something.

I am holding a Memorial Service later today for my darling husband who passed away last week after a year long fight with melanoma. DO NOT ignore this. If anything shows cancer it is probably one of the milder types of skin cancer, but proactive treatment started as quickly as possible is absolutely imperative.

Prayers and thoughts are with you. (((hugs)))

you can hyperventilate and die, or you can suck it up and find out....
