As an atheist it goes almost without saying that I don't believe in spiritual angels, although I have known a few human ones in my life. Your mother's belief is harmless enough, so maybe you shouldn't make a big deal out of it. It's kinda cute, anyway...your mother sounds like the mother I never had. Count your blessings, child.

No, I don't think anyone can really answer this. It is very subjective, and all we can do is give you our opinion.
I believe angels are metaphors. I do not think they have real existence any more than a fictional character in a book has existence. But certainly some characters do take on a life by the fact that people come to know them, discuss them as if they were real, treat them as real in many ways. This may indeed have a spiritual or psychic effect, or a psychological one.
