A framework or a system of beliefs and traditions that explain the world in metaphysical or supernatural terms. It's mainly meant to clarify and give meaning and a sense of order to the world and how people relate to it, and our purpose/direction within it and beyond.

The purpose of religion is to worship something that you believe in. For many people it is a comfort in time of sorrow or when they need strength. Different people believe in different religions just as they have different beliefs in how the government should be run and how a life should be led. What makes me angry is when people make generalizations in either direction. For example, "Because they believe in a divine presence, they are mind washed and controlled in every aspect of their life. They are also naive and need to think for themselves." And the counterpart, "If you have no religion in your life you have no morals or purpose in life. You are obviously a bad person that needs to be changed in every way." I myself feel that the most important thing is to be accepting of whether religion brings purpose to your life or if the lack of religion in your life is also purposeful.

If religion is not in your life, then for you it has no purpose.
For the Atheists who spend so much time in the R&S category, religion is entertainment. They can laugh and drink to the fundies of all denominations and feel proud of their contribution to world wide communication.
For anyone who practices a religion, it has meaning in the attempt to put those ideas and concepts which are beyond the grasp of humans into words and actions. Not all religions are equal. Some seem to do more harm than they do good.
In common language, religion attempts to make a very personal relationship with Divinity into something that can be shared. Anyone who believes in Divinity can believe in some form of religion. Anyone who does not or cannot believe in Divinity can only see folly.

The purpose is to related their (human's) relation with God. they believe that there is god and God. People's belief is different. Few people believe that there's gods and there's only one God and they do their own ways to relate themself to their gods and God. So, there's many different ways and rule which they create them self to worship gods and God. that's the purpose in the beginning. Then because of that rule believe and many more factor, people become fanatic with that rule and they think that another doctrine is deviate. That's what make people don't have a good relation with people in different religion.

Primarily to create a sense of community. But of course, it is also an effective method of control in countries where the religion and the government are tied together.
Which is one very big reason why we need to protect the First Amendment.

Even if the doctrines therein aren't completely true, religion at least offers hope, guidance, moralities, a sense of something much grander then themselves. Even though wars and fights have been raged because of religion, but at least when the dust settles, there is structure and even unity. After all, religion is what unified us after 9/11. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

religion in prehistory was a way to explain things we as a species did not understand, then it evolved into more of a security thing. My religion is a comfort for me now. religion is a reference framework aimed at explaining the universe. explain something that is so vast we have to categorize it in order to not fear it so much. b ut some use it as a tool to control the masses and damned if it ain't working!!

Mind controlling purposes.
Religion gives people the idea that theres something after you die, if you follow the religion you will be rewarded, if you don't then you're punished. It's basically just a way of stopping Anarchy.

it depends on which religion youre talking about. most religions werent revealed by GOD. they were just attempts by people to try to understand the supernatural. the purpose of judaism was for GOD to reveal himself to mankind. the purpose of christianity is to bring us into a personal relationship with GOD through his son Jesus Christ.
