I think your husband is disgracefully selfish for doing that. If my man did that he'd be on the sofa for a month. If bicarb won't shift the smell caused by that selfish rotter then I fear you'll have to get new jars.

I would guess the smell is still in the seals?? Chuck em and start again. Good cook shops sell replacement seals.

Try putting a handful of dried breadcrums in them and leave them overnight, that should do it but sometimes you'll need to repeat.
