Online. A tat mag. Check a directory and go check a couple of them out. Leave your money at home. The fist day is to check the place and the artists. Look through the books at past work, and see if you can find more artist info online.
When you find an artist you like, be prepared to pay. They will charge you way more if your idea or your art is lame and retarded, or they've seen it a million times, ie. dolphins, tribal, taz, peace signs, etc. Good artist like good art. A side tip is to not be a wussy and commit. Get big piece, even if it takes a few sessions. The tat artist like them because they are easier to express details, colors and subtleties on and you won't regret getting a lame little kid looking tat.

You know those arent the names of the studios right? Just the names of the shows.

Research the artists in your area, ask around, look at portfolios and ask the artist a lot of questions. There are good studios in every area...you just have to do your research first.

Check out a local tattoo convention. Also..theres this great site called inkednation.com.... its like myspace for tattoo enthusiasts and artists...and you can find places in your area and look at work they have done from your computer.

Brooklyn Ink? but seriously folks... if you were smart, you would hold out until you can afford what you want. once you have a crappy tattoo, it will be there forever. waiting a while for a good one will be worth it
