I have applied for a job I really want, I did the aptitude test, the medicals, and interviews, now I get a letter saying "they are pleased to inform me that I am on a short list and as soon as a vacancy occurs they will be in touch" should I hold my breath?

It means you have passed the selection criteria along with a small group of others. How long it might be before a vacancy comes up is difficult to say without knowing the company and staff turnover rate, however if they were recruiting you'd imagine weeks rather than months. Congratulations and good luck.

From a former headhunter's point of view, you are in a shortlist amongst others. However, there is no GREAT urgency to fill the role or no one has particularly stood out for them. Therefore, do not pin too high hopes on it moving fast.

However, you can ask them when is the likely-hood of this vacancy to be. Once again, don't hold your breath.

Those on a short list are the top contenders for a job.
