I was wondering how strict parents are with their teen(14-18) girls clothing choices.
What are your rules and what do you allow and not allow and why?
And how many of you still pick out their clothes, like everything they have is something YOU picked and approved?
Also any parents on here have kids that dress goth, punk, emo, skater and what are your feeling on how they dress?

If you are wondering, I AM bored. Humor me.

Kylie, thanks for that but I don't have kids.

Im 18 and was just curious about what other peoples views were.

I already know how im going to handle this situation with my kids when I have them.

No baggy, low slung jeans. I don't want to see your underwear and neither does anyone else.
No "hooker" clothes. What you wear sends a message and screw me is not the message my daughters under 18 will be sending!

I have to admit that I'm not a parent, but I do believe my views on the matter are pretty level-headed.

I would definitely not pick out every single item my child owned for clothing. It's restrictive and overbearing, and will only result in your child resenting you.

I would put some reasonable limitations on things you feel are inappropriate. Perhaps if you feel it's inappropriate to wear something that shows more than an inch of stomach, or something that is too tight/revealing. Allow your girls some freedom of expression, but draw the line at what you feel is appropriate.

Most importantly, teach your daughters the real reason for any restrictions you do place on them: that they should have respect for themselves and their bodies, and not use them as tools of manipulation but honor them as the things that house our spirits (if you believe in that - if not, the respect issue is enough without the metaphorical connection).

As far as goth, punk, emo, skater, or etc - I would say that as long as the style fits in your restrictions (there are some beautiful Victorian style goth clothes that aren't very revealing at all, for instance, and skater clothes are mostly kind of guy-ish anyway, I wouldn't see anything wrong with those).. the real concern is to make sure that skater, punk, goth, or whatever, that your child is mentally stable and healthy and hanging out with other kids who make good choices and don't follow the wrong crowd or ideas.

Stay involved in your kids lives, keep up with how they're doing, and support some of their individuality, and you'll be less likely to experience drastic rebellion or resentment in the future. Lay down realistic guidelines, along with explanations why you're enacting them, and your children will learn to respect your wishes.

Good luck to you.

When that becomes an issue with my girl I will give her some freedom but I am not going to let her go out of the house dressed like a slut. My job as daddy is to make sure she dresses like a lady so that the guys treat her like a lady.

If goth is still around when she is a teen (she is 2 1/2 now) I will let her as long as she isn't showing off too much leg or anything like that.

When she goes to college she is on her own and all I can do is hope she remembers everthing we taught her.

My neice is 14 and her mother lets her dress however she wants(picture emo/goth/stripper) so when she comes to my house I have to sometimes veto her clothing. It's not that i don't trust her, more that know she does hang around with a lot of guys, she's not really a girly-girl, and 14 year old boys sometimes have bad impulse control. I don't mind if she dresses a little sexy, becasue she's stll finding that part of herself, but it does bother me when she wants to act like she works for one dollar tips. It honestly doesn't bother me about the punk and goth clothing cuz most everything in my closet is goth/punk. I got rid of most of my revealing clothing though, to try to lead her by example. (And because I have three kids of my own now. )

For school clothes with my teenage kids, I go with them. they mostly pick out which clothes they like and I decide whether or not they are appropriate. When they go to the mall with their friends (they are 13 and 12) and they pick out clothes, they need to try them on (with the tag still on) and let me decide if it's ok. Beforehand, they need to tell me if it's for school, church, or the house so I can better decide. If I think it's inappropriate for what they said (and I don't let them change their mind), we take it back right away and to prevent another lapse in judgement, I keep the money they used to pay for it, no matter if I loaned them the money or if they saved it up. This has proved to be very affective for the both of them. However for me, I have 6 other kids and one of them is coming to this age soon. As long as the clothes aren't to revealing, then whatever style it may be (usually more preppy for the two of them) will be fine.

I have a 15 year old daughter and allow her to choose her own clothing. Let's face it, dad doesn't pick out the coolest threads. As long as she's comfortable in what she is wearing I don't have a problem. That is unless she wants to dress to adult. We have an understanding that if I'm not comfortable with it, she can't wear it. Kids want their own fashion. I'm sure my parents didn't approve of what I wanted to wear at all times and I have to respect her choices. Luckily she has not chosen goth, emo or punk but if she did that would be her choice. As long as everything is covered up and she doesn't look homeless.
