Stevens is a good rifle. They are made by savage. The good ole trusty -06 is one of the more universal rounds for hunting in north america because they can be loaded down for hunting deer or loaded up for hunting elk or bear. I would say you made a good choice.

I hope you mean that this is the first rifle bought specifically for you rather than your first ever shooting experience.

If it is your first ever rifle to shoot, the fact that it is a good rifle is beside the point, it is a terrible choice for a first-time shooter. You really need a good .22 LR rifle to learn the basics of firearms safety, sight picture, and trigger control.

If you already have lots of .22 LR experience, rest assured you've bought yourself a good, workman-like rifle that will give you good service for many years.

If you don't have any experience with a .22 LR, stick it in a closet and go buy a modestly priced .22 LR, a single-shot bolt-action will be fine, and a few bricks of .22 LR ammo. Then get some instruction from an experienced shooter in firearms safety, and how to hit your target.

Good Hunting, and Merry Christmas!

Doc

Yes, it's a decent rifle. If it doesn't already have a recoil pad on it, you might want to have one installed. Good shooting!
