Take the time you need to grieve and then go and get a new one when you feel ready. Don't buy one that looks the same though. Or maybe try a different pet like a dog, rabbit etc. that way you won't constantly be comparing the new one to the old one. I'm so sorry for your loss.

You are feeling like a murderer, aren't you? I have been in your position. Euthanasia is the ultimate act of love you could do for your cat. You put its welfare before your own feelings, and that is how it should be. There is no short answer, we have to work our way through grief. I still miss the furry babies I lost years ago, for whatever reason and by whatever means.
Look at the photographs and other memorabilia relating to the cat. Remember the good times, and the love you and your cat gave each other, even though you can't receive it any more. Take comfort in the fact you gave it a good and happy home. Did you bury your cat in the garden? If so, plant a rose bush as near as possible. If not, plant a tree or shrub somewhere convenient in memory of the cat. There is no shame in doing everything possible to remember cat by.

Time is the only thing that will heal it.
Be patient with yourself and you will heal.
For the future....
Sometimes it is better and easier to let nature take it's course and allow a pet to die naturally and not interfere with the dying process. It's not easy to do either.
Reminding yourself of why you had to euthanize your cat may be of some help, but it may not be. It may just make it worse.
We had to euthanise our dog over 16 years ago.
I still see the after affects of it in my life.
For the first time since then, I've been able to actually pet a dog and enjoy it this summer. But that's only one dog.
I still have no desire to pet any dog even now.
It' almost as if I have an aversion to dogs because of it.
My understanding is, when I react to dogs as I used to before we had that one, then I will be fully healed.
In time.
I have no problem connecting to people or other animals.
It's just dogs.

You already know that you had you cat put to sleep for the right reasons, you didnt state whether your cat was old or ill but I believe that you would not have done this unless there was no other option.
You have been kind to your cat rather than letting it suffer.
At the risk of sounding callous, although your cat which was put to sleep can never be replaced, perhaps you can give a loving home to another cat which would give you something to focus on.

If your cat was euthanised then it would have been the best thing you could have ever done for you beloved friend. To keep them alive would have been the cruel thing to do. If you have pictures and memories then they will never really be gone. Your friend will live on though you in your heart and mind. It will get easier I promise don't rush yourself. Say a proper goodbye to your friend.

I'm so sorry for your loss, the loss of a pet is very hard to deal with, whatever it is weather your pet was a hamster, cat, dog, horse, it hurts.
I've had two pets put to sleep within 3 months of each other this year, the last one was only two weeks ago, it hurts like hell, but I can promise you, it will get better, it will feel awful at the moment, but I promise, things will get better.
Hugs and best wishes

It takes time to get over the death of a pet.
It would have been crueller to keep the animal alive and suffering, so euthanasia was the best thing to do for your pet.
Give it a few weeks or months then see how you feel about getting another cat as you obviously care a lot about animals. Perhaps go to the rescue shelter and offer a good home to a stray?

Realize that your cat is no longer in pain
And remember the happy times - like when the ball got caught under the sofa - and they laid on their back and wiggled their hind feet trying to get it out with their front paws
Or when you had them chase a mouse on the end of a line
Or when they were SOSOSOSOSOSOSOSOOOOOOOO
proud to bring you that mouse from the back yard
(ours just brought a baby squirrel - that was still alive -
and we distracted her - while we shooed the squirrel bait
back out the door) - still crying over that one LOL
yeah - it hurts - no easy way out - BUT
remember the GREAT times - and they are in no pain now
all the best ;-)

I know that this may to sudden, but have you ever thought of adopting another pet?
There are so many animals that need homes, especially during the holiday, this time of year. If you save one life, you again will receive more happy memories.
I guarantee that.
For now, much condolences to your beloved family friend.
