I dunno. Personally believe we are Christians by the generally accepted definition.. But if it turns out that we don't fit the "true" definition of a Christian, then fine. So be it. I don't care about the label when I know that I'm doing what's right for me. In the end, iot's a label just like all the little high school cliques that don't let you in if you don't wear the right amount of make up or gel with the right people. Childish and petty arguing over a label I say. On both sides.
EDIT:
I believe we used to refer to ourselves as "saints", but I am not sure. I will look it up and get back to you.

We have never gone by the term 'Restored. We believed that the gospel of Jesus Christ, was restored' to the earth, but that is quite different than being called, restored.
As to being Christians?, we are, as we follow the teaching of 'Jesus Christ. We believe that Christ died for our sins, and that Jesus, is the ''way' to reach heavenly Father, as he is our mediator' to God, as we speak to God , through Him..
We close our prayers, ''In the Name of thy Most beloved Son, Jesus Christ, Amen
The Council of Nicea, was the ones that decided that the godhead was three in 'one in purpose'.
We believe that the godhead id made up of three individual beings. God, The Father, and God, the son, and God. The Holy Ghost, who always, is a testifier, as to the truth of the first Two.
Jesus DID NOT speak to himself on the cross. He spoke .to His Father.
people can make fun of Mormons all they want to do so. We have broad shoulders, and we really don't care what other people think about us.
After what we survived in the 1840's, and the 1850's we have the right to believe whatever we want to believe.
those that don't like it? Well, they can go suck and egg, and then leave us alone anyway. We really don;t care.
And those that are interested in the truth, will find it regardless of whatever you, or any other bashers have to say.
And why do you care one way or the other, as I am pretty sure, you are an atheist, judging from your avatar.? I recognize the name.

We still claim that God restored the Church of Jesus Christ, now formally called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We have always considered ourselves Christians. The very beginning of Mormonism occurred when Jesus Christ appeared to a young boy named Joseph Smith, in the spring of 1820. The Head of our Church has always been Christ, even 10 years before the Church was formally organized in 1830. Why do you think we only recently began to call ourselves Christians?

Since day One.
The name that the church was given when it was officially founded by Joseph Smith was:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
Mormons have been Christians for as long as there have been "Mormons"
Originally "Mormon" was a derogatory nickname. Now we all refer to ourselves that way. We might also call our selfs "LDS", "latter-day saints", or Saints.
Mormons have never been known as "Restored".
Mormons have always believed that Jesus Christ is their redeemer, Lord, and Savior.

We have always believed in Christ. People way we are not Christians trying make people think we do not believe in Christ. We are simply standing up and testifying of our faith in the Christ of the Bible. After all, we clearly believe in Christ since the full name of the LDS church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
We also still believe that Christ's gospel and priesthood has been restored in its fullness as it was given by Christ in the early Church.
Where we depart from other believers in Christ is that we do not follow the creeds of the Catholic church about the trinity. We believe Christ is the Son of God as it says in the Bible.

I have been Mormon all my life, and have never once hear a Mormon use the word "restored" to describe what they believe. We believe that our Church is the same Church Christ had upon the Earth and that it was restored to the earth by Joseph Smith, however.
According to dictionary.com, the definition of a christian is:
1. of, pertaining to, or derived from Jesus Christ or His teachings: a Christian faith.
2. of, pertaining to, believing in, or belonging to the religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ:
The Mormons, also known as the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints, believes that Christ is the savior of the world and that he is the only begotton son of God. We believe that all mankind can be saved through him and we believe in the atonement. We believe in the Bible and ALL of Christ's teachings. We also believe in the Book of Mormon, a different set of scriptures that is another testament of Jesus Christ's life. Our religion is based on what he taught; he is the center of our religion. Our goal in life is to become as Christlike as we can.
Yes, we are Christians-- both by DEFINITION and by our beliefs.

I believe they have always identified themselves as Christian. They believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and the Savior. They don't believe in the strict definition of the Trinity, based on the Nicene Creed, which most other churches use as the definitive test for being called Christian. It's apparently all in the semantics of the term Christian.

For as long as I can remember they have called themselves "Christians". At least when I grew up in Idaho all the Mormons I knew used it and that was in the 80's.
Sorry I didn't have an actual date or event that marked the beginning of its use by the LDS.
