Does any one have any handy recipies? I have tried it mixed with cottage cheese, mixed with yogurt, and as a salad dressing, but the smell and texture really make me gag. I have never been able to stand any oil (bad experience with a pancake once) and I really really would like to include this in my diet. To take it in the capsule form would mean taking over 20 capsules in a day, and I cannot tolerate that either (previous gastric tumor surgery). I need 4 table spoons a day, but at the moment, cannot take even 1/4 of a teaspoon.

All ideas welcome!

Yes it is a lot, and that amount is what my GP has told me. It is a huge amount of fat and calories, but because of the way the body metabolises it, it does not cause the same problems as if I was having 4 table spoons animal fat. My HDL cholesterol is very very low, and this hopefully will give it a boost, along with helping my arthritis and Crohn's.

Another thing, it cannot be used to cook with, heating it is a no-no. It the seeds are also not an option, as they will pass through the system without breaking down enough to get the full benefit.

We must go to the same GP, because my GP has recommended the same amount for me as well (I am guessing that you are voluptuous?).

The capsules are no where near enough, they don't even reach a therapeutic level, you would need to take 60 tablets! Now this is not for 'normal' people, this is for people who have significant health problems such as you describe. Don't worry about the laxative effect, because it is a bulking agent, not a stimulant. As for how to take it so it is palatable? good question, I mix it in with mashed sweet potatoes, or other vegetables after they are cooked and cooled down a bit.

Good luck, hope that it will help with all your problems.

linseed and flax seed oil are worlds apart but started as the same oil. The linseed oil is rancid completely and very bad for you because of this . The flax seed oil is only worth buying ,if you get it from the fridge in the health food store, and ask if it has been kept below 4c since pressing? otherwise it will be rancid [bitter tasting as well] and harmful. What Wiki told you is both true in it;'s right context as explained here. Don't know who the ignorant person is who would negative tick this? When it is fresh, l can drink it straight as it is lovely but expensive. Melrose is an ok brand here. Cooking with flaxseed oil is a no no, as it's flash temperature is the lowest of any oil and then it is rancid again. Use extra virgin olive oil on a medium heat for cooking as it's molecular structure doesn't change as much as some oils when cooked and is still recognised by the body somewhat.

Why do you want to take 4 tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily? That would be about 500 calories and nearly 60 grams of fat; that is the recommended amount of fat for an entire day and about a third of your daily calories! That much flaxseed oil could not be part of a healthy diet: you would have to eat no other foods with fat. Did your doctor recommend that much flaxseed oil?

Some people recommend eating about 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed daily. Two capsules of flaxseed oil provides the same amount of omega 3 fatty acids as 1 tablespoon of ground seed. I think you need 2 capsules, not 20, daily.

See the link below for info about flaxseed.

Try mixing it into a fruit smoothie--I do it all the time. Also, you can mix it into a chocolate shake or protein powder. I don't recommend you start drinking coffee, but if you already do, it tastes pretty good in it and will make the experience more healthful. My favorite Flaxseed oil is Barlean's 100% organic, cold-pressed. It has a slightly nutty flavor, but isn't that bad really.

I mix it with alot of fruit and flaxseed oil and protien powder and ice and make a shake. mostly berries mixed fresh or frozen its not to bad. I drink two a day one for breakfast and one for dinner or lunch. You should also try ground flaxseed instead of the reqular flaxseed.

(can you bake with the oil instead of veg. oil? i forget what oils can be baked with, if so, maybe make muffins with ground flaxseed and that oil?)

I take it orally in pill form...That way you can swallow 20 pills a day if you absolutely need to..... divided up in several doses.......because 4 tablespoons a day is hard for you try mixing it in a SHAKE maybe?..just a thought!!!
