Only the 20, 60, and 80 gb can play PS2 games. The 20 and 60 gb version has the emotion engine, which was the CPU used to run PS2 games, so most PS2 games can be played on the 20 and 60 gb version.
The 80 gb version uses software emulation, so there are less PS2 games that are playable on the 80 gb version.
The 40 gb cannot and will not play PS2 games. There's no way to make it play PS2 games.

PS1 and PS2 games can only be played on the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB PS3's. The 40GB PS3 is the only PS3 that can't play PS2 games.

Some of the early PS3's were backwards compatable. Now however I believe that they aren't. Best idea, check the box, if its compatible its sure to be listed under the features.
