What happened to Jim Jones? What made him see the Christian Faith the way he did and create Jonestown and kill so many people? That is not Christianity or any Religion I know if, it sounds more of a Cult. But it was a Christian group just an extreme group.

My question is what attracted people to such a psycho and believe he was a prophet?

thanks. No offense, I am educating myself. You Christians must have been shocked at what he did in the name of your faith.

Do you think the Senators execution was pre- meditated or just a sudden decision? Why did the Senator not bring Armed gaurd's with him?

Please all know that I am Pagan and that is why I am asking. Quoting scripture does not help me or answer my question, sorry it does not make sense to me no offense meant. I am a passive pagan.

He may not have been Christian but his followers were. Almost a Mini Hitler!

I thumb up but only down if you are rude. Ive thumbed No none down yet.

How is this different than your own Messiah then? How will you know your second coming? Or for Jews the first Coming? I am only curious thank you. How do you know you don't end up putting the real one in a white suit and filled up with drugs and he really was the first or second coming? Again just curious.

He killed himself by shooting himself with a shotgun in the head, according to reports.

He died with everyone else in Jonestown.

There are some very good books out about this phenomenon, whether it's Jonestown, specifically, or cults in general. Many of them will explain why people join groups like that.

I'll list some below in the source section. If you're interested in discussing this more, send me a message.

Does anyone truly know what could possibly drive a man into becoming a Jim Jones?

There are Christians that would say Jim Jones had a "God" complex. He believed he was something he wasn't, because of the number of people that were his followers, even though the followers were just that,,,,,following. Many of the people involved with Jim Jones were Christians, yet not true believers in the belief and faith of the Lord. They were lost in their own confusion, and believed everything that Jim Jones was telling them, until it was too late.

And it still is going on today with other so called "prophets", that lure in the lost, or the weak, or the ignorant.

I don't think it was shock that I felt when the suicide of so many Christians was published!!! It was more like sorrow for all those souls that were mislead, because they chose to ignore the teachings of the Bible and the Love of the Lord. The Bible warns of false prophets, yet people just go on continuing to follow; believing in the false prophet; that this just might be the 'one'; When in reality there is only One and that is the Lord.

he started with good intentions (he attracted most cultures because he was true to his belief and wanted to lead people to God; he was a good speaker to the point that people loved what and how he spoke) but in time he started to become paranoid; he slowly slipped from reality and in order to save face he took some severe steps to protect his and his alone dream-move his "church" to where he acted. He eventually saw the reality in his mistakes---killing innocent people and impregnating the women at the camp something like David Koras---the Texas incident but by then it was too late; he was later diagnosed with some mental disorder that had not been diagnosed so when he was given hard illegal drugs by the officials of his camp he went totally paranoid to the point that he felt he was being persecuted by those around him---the senator and relatives of those in the camp, I have read that he was a Jesuit which is not really a sort of religious entity but more of a cult where he actually sacrificed the entire population to his idea of god.
Is he in hell? He is if he died in his sins for there is no more hope once a person stops breathing---he wanted to commit suicide but was not able to so he had someone else kill him; there is a book and a documentary where his---Jim Jones' son speaks of what went on at James town.

I think any group is shocked when someone distorts their purpose and uses it to bilk people out of money and talks them into committing suicide.

As far as his early life, Wikipedia has a good article on him. Basically, it appears he was a sociopath from childhood, and although he originally was trying to honestly start a better society, he began to be more interested in controlling other people than in living any kind of Christian life.

Jim Jones committed suicide. His followers were easily influenced people who thought that what they were doing was correct, because of the directions of Jim Jones. His sociopathic tendencies, which he had his entire life from childhood, were what ultimately led him to be a control over the lives and deaths of his followers.

Well, Jim Jones led a cult. Usually people like Jim Jones have something that attracks people to them like a neat personality, or they come across as a real theologian. People who are searching for something tend to flock to people like him because in the beginning, they are accepting and loving. Then they start hanging on every word he says. They believe everything that he says. Then when everybody in your "cult" or group are doing the same thing, and everybody is all excited about it, they do dumb things like commit suicide because he told you that you had to in order to get to heaven. He would never have called himself a cult though. Once you get sucked into something like that, it is hard to get out and just as equally as hard for your family members to get you out of it.

If I have to guess, I'd say that he was inspired to do what he did by a demon or demons. There were things he said that would have had me walking away from him while he was in San Francisco. But the people were so easily led astray by a man who had charisma, and that was one of their last mistakes. They did not know the scripture OR God well enough to see what was happening.

23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand.
26 “Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.Matthew 24:23-27
You Will Know Them by Their Fruits

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.Matthew 7:15-20

Though he may have professed to be Christian, he claimed himself to be the Messiah for his little band of followers towards the end of his "ministry". Some believed, some did not. He felt the safest conclusion is for all of them to die before the government moves in.

It is called CRAZY! If the Christians who followed him were so weak to believe what he said, then they were crazy too.

What about that loon from South America who says he is Jesus and he has 666 tattooed on him....Jim Jones is about to happen all over again!

PS>> I am a Christian and I don't believe in putting faith in man. Man is fallible, but not God.
