This is really cool, and it's easy to do, especially if you have kids. Get an egg, some paint brushes (cheap ones are fine) and some food dye. Beat the egg well until it's totally mixed up, and divide it into a few cups (you can use muffin tins). Then, use a few drops of dye in the egg mixture. Then you can 'paint' onto the sugar cookies. Make sure to do this BEFORE you bake them. The heat makes the egg and dye bake onto the cookies. You can also go to a craft store that sells wilton cake decorating supplies and find edible markers for writing on icing (you need to have a recipe for smooth and hard icing for this, but the results are really cool. You can really get some good details with the markers. Sometimes you can find them in supermarkets, in the cake and baking aisle. As others have said don't add the cream cheese. Cream cheese frosting is wonderful but not right for sugar cookies. My little tip of the day is to make sure your butter is at a warm room temperature. One time I made frosting with slightly cool butter and I could not get the little chunks to blend in no matter what I did.

Royal Icing is the typical icing used on sugar cookies. You can dye it with food coloring, thin the icing to use as a glaze which dries with a shine and then thicken it with powdered sugar to pipe on designs - just use a freezer or sandwich page with the corner snipped off. You will need egg whites for the royal icing.
Another option is butter cream frosting, taste great and will look good especially colored, but I wouldn't use it for decorating.
Save the cream cheese to make frosting for carrot cake or pumpkin muffins, not the best choice for sugar cookies.

Royal Icing is the best. Do NOT use the cream cheese unless you are planning to eat the cookies IMMEDIATELY or keep them stored in the fridge for less than a week. Cream cheese frosting can not sit out long, and it does not harden like regular cookie frosting. Royal Icing is what professional bakers use to frost cookies. You can add coloring as desired.
Royal Icing
3 Tablespoons Meringue Powder (you can also use a powdered coffee creamer such as Coffee Mate!)
1 lb. (4 cups) confectioners' sugar (about 1lb.)
6 Tablespoons warm water*
Beat all ingredients until icing forms peaks (7-10 minutes at low speed with a heavy-duty mixer, 10-12 minutes at high speed with a hand-held mixer). Recipe makes 3 cups.
NOTE: Keep all utensils completely grease-free for proper icing consistency.
* For stiffer icing, use 1 tablespoon less water.
**When using large countertop mixer or for stiffer icing, use 1 tablespoon less water.
Thinned Royal Icing: To thin for pouring, add 1 teaspoon water per cup of royal icing. Use grease-free spoon or spatula to stir slowly. Add ½ teaspoon water at a time until you reach proper consistency.

all you need for sugar cookies is a simple glaze you can make from powdered sugar, milk, and water. mix them together to have an opaque but thin mixture (it should still be able to flow like a liquid). you can add food coloring.
you dont spread, but rather, you drizzle it over the cookies. it should dry smoothly if it's thin enough.

With a mixer, beat 1/2 cup butter. Gradually add 4 cups powdered sugar. Beat well. Add 1 tbsp milk and 1 tsp vanilla and beat again. For color, just add 1-2 drops at a time beating after each until you reach the desired color.
