One example of an early remote was a small hand-held unit for a 1948 Garod TV set (model 10TZ20), which was called a "Telezoom", it only enlarged the picture with the press of a button, and did not change channels, or anything else, for that matter. All of the early remotes were wired to the TV set, usually with a 20 foot long cable (wire).

The first WIRELESS remote control, which used a beam of light aimed at one of the sensors on the four corners of the picture tube, was the Zenith "Flash-matic", released in late 1955, as a built-in, (non-accessory) feature for several 1956 Zenith models.

Zenith began playing around with the idea of a TV remote control in the early 1950's. They developed one in 1952 called "Lazy Bones," which was a long cable that was attached to the TV set. Pushing buttons on the remote activated a motor that would rotate the tuner in the set. This type of remote wasn't popular for long considering that, at the time, there were very few channels to choose from.

The first cordless remote ( UK ) in the late 50s was ultra sonic ! it worked fine provided you did not not jangle a bunch of keys or let the budgie or canary whistle , if you did the aforementioned then the TV had a mind of its own and chose its own channel
