I run the 400m Dash for my highschool. I've been running track since third grade. Recently, I have had problems with my knees on the 400m Dash. I start off okay, without any pain, but when I leave the last curve coming into the final 100m of the race, my knees begin to get really tight and heavy, making it difficult for me to pick up speed. I don't feel tired, my knees just won't let me push myself to run faster on the last 100m. When I finish the race, my knees and the back of my knees really hurt and feel tight. I tried stretching myself longer, but it didn't help my knees any. What is this, and how can I prevent it from happening in the future?

I used to have this problem too. But worse.
when i was in high school, i ran the 400. I had weak knees from old injuries. So when i ran, i had the same symptoms.
-my knees ached
-my knees would go numb
-my knee caps would feel like they were jumping around which really hurt.
all parts of my knee would hurt. I had tendonitis, sore ligaments.
I went to the doctor and he told me something that really pissed me off. He told me to strengthen my legs.
But he was right. I did alot of squats, knee bends, lunges and other leg excersises and my legs and knees felt way better by the end of the season. I also PRed that year by 2 seconds.

To keep your knees from aching and hurting, you need to strengthen your quads and hamstrings. They help to stabalize your knee and ease the impact. Strengthening your calvs will work too.

So work on strenghtening your quads and hamstrings evenly. If one set of muscles is stronger, the pull on your knee cap will be off and it will cause more pain, which might be the problem now.

About Braces:
Don't use them unless you have been injured or have an onld injury. All they will do is weaken your knee by giving un necessary support. You need to get stronger, so dont worry about a brace untill your knee starts hurting off the track when you arent doing anything.
(dont over stretch!)

Good luck and trust me, it works.

I have been running for practically all my life and i have knee problems as well. I still have no idea why my knees are so sore. I bought some knee braces, and that seemed to do the trick. They're at sporting goods stores and they're inexpensive. They're straps with a rubber tube that sits under or above your kneecap- whatever feels best. I use those while running, and if my knees hurt after i run, i put a larger brace on them that comes up to my thigh and down to my shin.

Go to the doctor and get your knees checked out, the doctor will probably recommend some sort of knee support for you.
