Hi- My husband has been a tattoo artist for quite some time but we live in a rural little town and had never had an african american client until a week ago. She is a woman from africa and we did a heart with angel wings on her lower back. She wanted color but now called and states the color didnt take very well and that it looks faded after giving it a few days to heal. Does anyone have suggestions for getting ink to take in such dark skin or what colors are better than others. Her skin tone is a medium to dark brown, ALmost toward a coffee color skin. We just want to do everything to make this turn out for her as she is returning to africa in only 3 months. Please email us at blue2cry@hotmail.com with any suggestions and we'd be happy to take them into consideration. Also are there better brands of ink to choose for that skin tone? Currently we've got voodoo, skin candy, scream, kuro sumi and moms. Nothing seems to be working well though. Any imput would help alot.

Because of the skin pigment like the one you described, black ink sometimes tends to grays out. You also have the situation that the tattoo is very new and skin of color tends to hyperpigment upon injury so you have a natural darknening under your colors.

Pick the brights because they have a certain level of titanium dioxide in them and will hold the color better - plain reds, for instance, often have a larger proportion of organic red and therefore are too transparent in very dark skin to show up when healed.

Also consider laying down some dark brown for a warmer base before top coating it with black to prevent the "gray" effect of working on many skins of color.

i am an artist in memphis tn. i tattoo dark skin every day. some really dark pigmented skin will not show black as well without white highlighting in cerain places. brighter colors work great like pinks, sky blue, reds, etc. natural colrs like browns, yellows, oranges will not show up as well.
some dark skin shows bright colors better than most caucasions.
