I saw on the news this morning this lady that was referring to a special meeting last night in which the public was able to attend a discussion regarding whether or not the law should be changed to allow police to inquire as to the immigration status of people they stop. She said that it would be horrible if she was asked for this as she is a legal immigrant. This got me to thinking. I agree that it would be unfair if just Latino people alone were asked for this. I for one would have no problem making it a law for ALL people stopped (regardless of there ethniticty) to be checked and would gladly present proof of my status if allowed to make sure that all of those that are here illegally (including those that might be from say England or Germany) are dealt with for breaking the US laws. I would like to hear what others think?

>>Several answers seem to imply that I am from Mexico or that I am siding with them. I am not! I just do not think that people should be singled out for their race (or creed for that matter). I do however want all of the US laws followed and this included immigration laws. I DO NOT want to have to pay more in the way of taxes, insurance, etc. to take care of people that are here illegally. So ffor all of you that think I am a bleeding heart, you are sadly mistaken. I just do not want to see legitimate US citizens that may be Latino (or otherwise) singled out.

Minor inconvenience for a greater good. If someone wanted to verify my citizenship, that's ok by me. It might be annoying, but I would certainly agree with it being done.

In theory it sounds like a good idea BUT how would you like it if you were born in America & your parents are American citizens but are from another country so you look foreign & you were constantly asked for proof of citizenship? If the police had done their job and ran the proper background check on Erik Jovani Martinez when he was arrested this information would have shown up . I live further south then Scottsdale & we do not have such a program. I thought only INS or boarder patrol had the right to ask these questions. When I go to Nogales,Sonora Mexico & come back to the USA I must show my passport to a boarder patrol agent. Then about 20 minutes up the I 19 there is another checkpoint also manned by boarder patrol agents asking if I am a US citizen. That seems like a waste of time & money as that checkpoint has been there for years so what illegals are going to drive up the I 19 knowing that there is another checkpoint?

There are between 40-60 million* and the crime, drugs and other stuff must stop. Employers must pay 1099 taxes. This is either a socialist republic or a sovereign nation. If the libs and demos want it so much, then straighten ut the country first then do it. Why do they lie, knowing it will never happen, only the republicans came up with a solutions and the other side just does bogus stuff for votes.. Thing is they know they are bogus and much of the crime is in their area and they also want it stopped as they are also AMERICANS!

FROM WIKIPEDIA; In March of 2006 the Pew Hispanic Center estimated the undocumented population ranged from 11.5 to 12 million individuals[1], a number supported by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO)[2]. Pew estimated that 57% of this population comes from Mexico; 24% from Central America and, to a lesser extent, South America; 9% from Asia; 6% from Europe, and the remaining 4% from elsewhere.[3] **** so according to this 85% of the illegal immigrants are from mexico, central america and south america. my guess would be that there is some manner of resemblance. who else is there to look for? honestly how could you call this profiling when it's reality? 85 out of 100 illegal immigrants are latino and the other 15 would be asian and european. so just who should we be looking for? just thought i'd through my statistics in from wikipedia and as always they are attached on the link. so when you hear racial profiling you should laugh the reality is latinos are the largest group here illegally so who should ICE be stopping and questioning latinos. who do legal latinos have to thank for the nightmare that is their lives illegal latinos. give me a break. politically correct, racial profiling being cried in the streets to get anti illegal immigration folks to back off. when a little research shines a light on reality. personally i don't see the need to carry papers as i do not resemble latinos and real numbers indicate just who ICE should be looking for and questioning, so i feel safe in not doing so. boy i'd love to see them (ACLU, la raza, mecha, a z t l a n) try to take this to court it would never pass muster.

Currently Phoenix does not ask for immigration status on minor offenses and The Mayor finally grew some and is proposing to get rid of Operation 1.4 . This because currently the Phoenix PD does not ask for immigration status on minor crimes.

I do not believe it is specifically racially profiling. And with all that is going on with people disregarding laws, I do see a positive in having the police beginning to be harsh on those who are illegally in this country. If I ever do a minor crime and have to prove I am a citizen, I have no issue with it. Do you?

Anyone stopped for suspicion of illegal activity will be asked about immigration. This is not true now in most areas. It should be true everywhere.

Example: being pulled over for a traffic violation, being questioned in a bar after a brawl, a cop visiting a home after a domestic disturbance, checking a group of kids at school for drugs, etc. Today in sanctuary cities the police ask nothing. They should. Illegal immigration is our of control and it hurts all Americans, especially the middle and working class.

Good idea. I, for one would not mind proving that I am legally here if doing so would get the illegals sent back. If people are here legally, why should they mind proving it? The only ones who have anything to lose are the illegals.

The Mexicans have done it too themselves. The government needs to stop being so poilitically correct and draw a line. There is no problem asking a person for there citizenship papers, obviously if you appear hispanic and carry a thick accent and can't speak a word of english, guess what there most likely illegal . And if you don't know english you shouldn't be in the USA in the first place. Why do you think people are making such a huge stink in the first place? Because most hispanics that are asked for their papers are illegal. Whats the big deal, show your legal papers and be on your way. It's all about flip flopping the situation and making the US citzens who want to protect our country look like the bad guys. Profiling is necessary. We need to start cracking down and deport these people.

First of all, you know as well as I do that this will encourage the police to make more stops of people that they PERCEIVE to may be illegal (AKA Hispanic). Secondly, what proof could you or I possibly carry aside from a birth certificate to prove our citizenship?? Undocumented can get licenses in several states, and, then transfer them to wherever they live. The can legally register a vehicle. So, if we are supposed to carry around our birth certificate- there is no picture. So, JOE SHMO can get 10 copies of his, sell them for $100 each, and, this is moot.

What does that lead us to? The government requesting that we accept a "National ID".... At which point, I will be leaving this country..... As a Christian, I believe this is the first step to the mark of ID in the hand or on the forehead...

I have no problem proving citizenship in the slight chance that I will be asked. I am also willing to wait longer to board an air plane. These things are by-products of lawlessness and at some point I had to make a decision as to whether the inconvenience was worth my fight against lawlessness. My decision is that it is worth it.
