There are a lot of sites out there but there is no magic website. you need to start with yourself and work backwards using birth, death, marriage certificates, obits and cemetery records. Census records are good too.
get a book called unpuzzling your past by Emily Croom. She takes you step by step. She is a well know researcher. I have used her book for over 15 yrs. She has since updated it.
Anything you find online should be used as a tool. Most info online has not been documented so until its proved you must only use it a a tool
here are two free sites, familysearch.org and rootsweb.com
Document everything. This is your only way to prove your ancestry.

You can go to www.ancestry.com and trace your family. It's not a free site but it's worth paying for the data they have. They have the U.S. Census records back to 1790. You can also go to the DAR website (daughters of the american revolution) and search their data base for any relative that fought in the Revolutionary War.
When you first start tracing your ancestry you need to start by asking the older members of your family - parents, grandparents, etc. Once you have your grandparents names (or better yet your great grandparents names) you can search the census. For instance, if you have your great grandfather's name and you know that he was born in 1900 in California then you can search the census of 1910 for California and you'll find him, age 10, and his parents and siblings.
Your public library has access to the census as well.

Greetings,
In the history of the Chinese people, there are three important elements that are significant. They are China's history, the local gazette and a clan's genealogy. Amongst these three elements, genealogy has the longest history and is the most influential. Jia Pu (translated as genealogy record), also known as Zu Pu, is a record of a clan's history and lineage. It documents the origins of the surname, the migration patterns of the clan, the family lineage, the ancestral biography, the story of the locality, etc.

My Grandmother is very into finding out about my family's background and such. She uses the website www.ancestry.com and has really found out a lot of good information and even found some people that we are related to in other parts of the world. I would start there.
Also try talking to your oldest relatives, usually they can give you some names of some really old family members to search.
I hope this helps.

By joining a suitable family club / group, such as Hokkien association (if you're a Hookien and a Chinese), you'll have better chance and proper channel to trace your ancestry.
Good luck.

There are several websites sponsered by the church of jesus christ of latter day saints that you can do all kinds of geneology on. Google LDS GENEOLOGY try them seperatley and together if you need to, but that's where I would start. Also, The church of jesus christ of latter day saints have many centers around the world where people can come in and do that kind of work. Any one of any religion is welcome inside of the church's centers for geneology work.
