Yes, I feel very sorry for them. In fact, I consider the guilt trip laid on them to be nothing short of child abuse. The fact is, masturbation is not only normal, but positively healthy. You can relax and get to sleep better. A kid that's laying in bed, tense and awake, because of an urge to do something he or she has been told could condemn him or her to Hell, is going to be really messed up in no time at all.

I don't know about injuring their health physically speaking, but it could definitely threaten their emotional, mental, and sexual health.
I really haven't known any adolescent who has actually refrained from masturbation... though I've known those who have felt guilty about it. I really think that's the precise reason it's a sin. Guilt breeds a sense of obligation to the person, organization, or entity you have "wronged". Keeps the sheep humbled and in line.
Hopefully, the kids who are distressed over their "personal quality time" will realize it's perfectly healthy before they have a chance to grow a major complex over it.

Went through all of that when I was indoctrinated into Catholicism. Got over it. I now masturbate when the urge hits me without a shred of guilt. But I prefer actual coitus with the opposite sex because it's much more pleasurable. Thumbs down from all the religious prudes out there! Thank you!
Edit: To Matthew P: I think asker means that prohibitions against masturbation by certain religious organizations is hazardous to mental and emotional health, not physical. I wholeheartedly agree because I, as a former Catholic, lived the guilt.

From what I've seen, this isn't all that uncommon. And yes, it is pretty darn sad. It's damaging not only to their physical health, but their mental health...I mean, if there's something wrong with masturbating, then it stands to reason that there must be something wrong with THEM because they WANT to masturbate. Everyone wants to. What's almost as sad is my friend, who was raised Christian, but has been Pagan for over 10 years, still has to be reminded that sex (ANYTHING related to sex) is ok, because we don't have to think about "sin" in our religion! Poor girl.

You don't need to be told that it is a sin to feel guilty and ashamed about it. I just feel bad for them, in that they also have fear of eternal damnation gnawing on the back of their minds whenever they get the urge. Might cause some dysfunction, but most of them seem to survive well enough.

What? That's dumb. It's like telling a two-year old that wetting the bed is a sin. It's not like they never did it.
I mean, the dreams that usually precede it aren't usually particularly, ahem, spiritual (are they?) but as long as they don't act on those thoughts, then why is it a sin?
Makes me think of a song lyric-"No matter how you feel, it's what you do that matters."
It's better than a lot of other things they could be doing.

There are kids out there being told it is a sin to do many things that other kids do. Some aren't allowed to cut their hair, wear what they want, or even get medical attention when they need it. This crap has been going on forever and it won't stop anytime soon.

There was an old religious belief that at one time spawned many jokes that would reflect the superstition, and those jokes ended with words similar to masturbaters are mass murderers.
