From the end of month 3 through 11 months the #1 toy was the Rainforest Jumperoo by Fisher-Price.
Smaller favorites were Weebles, rattles, and a teddy bear.

The absolute, hands down best toy you can buy for a baby in their first year is a jumperoo! I am sorry I waited so long to buy one for my son. He loves it so much and can't stop laughing and smiling the entire time he is jumping. He also talks up a storm at the same time. In less than a month (now at 6 months) he has strengthened his legs more than I ever could have imagined and can hold himself up very well. It has also taught him to twist in his seat to make it twirl around to other toys. Within the past 2 weeks he has been grabbing everything and, I know it is partially because of his age, but I really do think it has something to do with the jumperoo and all of the toys on in. (We have the Fisher Price Rainforest Jumperoo). And, I have to admit, it is so fun just to watch him having a good time in it.

Card board boxes and cooking pots with wooden spoons.
Go figure. The first year is about exploration. I spent an nice piece of change on my son his first Christmas and two weeks later, he was back to card board boxes.
Just keep it really simple. Blocks and anything that makes noise will do fine. Two or three toys is optimal.

My son is one, he has recently a favorite "baby" - a little doll with a bean bag body and cabbage patch kid styled head, he loves it, gives it hugs and kisses.
He also has his rubber ducks, and home-made shakers (babyfood jars or prescription jars with dried beans, pastas, rice, bottle caps, pop tabs, etc inside them, labels removed).
Another favorite is the empty plastic coffee can, for him to drop his shakers into.
Old club cards (credit card sized but no personal info), ID cards, etc
And this toy that you drop a ball into, and it falls down into a maze of sorts and comes out the bottom.
The Popper toy, where you twist, turn, push the knobs and little animals pop up.
Boxes, papers to put in them, containers of all types, kitchen utensiles, etc.
So many non-toy items are fun to play with, is what I'm sure my son would tell you.
He has a basket full of "real toys" he very rarely is interested in... lots of household items have his approval, though.

My daughter is 7 months and she loves the Pooh musical toys, especially the ones with pictures that move as the music goes along. The new aquarium that you install in their crib is awesome too! Anything musical for that age is awesome. G'luck!
