If they must be sent to an "army", it better be to an army of laborers.
Army personnel are trusted with anywhere from tens of thousands to millions of dollars worth of equipment. Who's to say they won't desert with a rifle or a radio (military radios being expensive, but also very sensitive to national and international defence)? Not to mention the Army runs on a system of strict discipline.
I understand where you're going with this. The cost of keeping a criminal in prison is ridiculous. They commit a crime, and the whole country has to pay for it. But rather than put them in an organization that has no need for them, they should be out working on farms or toiling in factories.

I agree. All lifers should be inserted into a high-security rehabilitation compound where they are completely broken down spiritually and mentally, completely. To the point where they don't know who they are or where they came from anymore. If need be they can serve their sentence in there for the rest of their lives until reformed.
Then train them to be the baddest most vicious soldiers that would make even ancient face to face clashing armies cringe.
Then they will be respected as the best company/unit in the world of all of history. But they'll have terms similar to a combat dog. Once a combat pooch, always a combat pooch. Euthanize when service is no longer needed/provideable.
And then and then and then they can become space marines. yah. /turns off tv

because most high school grads cannot qualify to serve in the Army. I guarantee very very few prisioners can and definitly not those in for life.
The military requires its members to have the highest moral and ethical standards. Stealing, lying, cheating and other offenses are not tolerated. Also, you have to be a HS Grad and be able to learn some very technical skills. The military is for the best and the brightest.... all others need not apply.

we are not in the 60' and 70's anymore where the judge said army or jail. The army is not a babysitter for criminals.
Why dont we just sentence all the murderers to death. that would safe money too and stop the wanna be's in their tracks

military Rangers ain't SF. they are elite airborne squaddies. I skinny that DEVGRU has been used like hide for the actual information. it is enormously glaring that Delta,a hundred and sixtieth have been there, and it've been secret, like a Shadow business enterprise. CIA's SOG have been there too. Bye.

Unruly, untrustworthy, and previous contempt for authority are the highest on the list.
Also, if they are pretty much forced into the military, what makes you think they won't just high-tail it the first second they get?
Bad things happen when you train criminals how to kill better.
Though, when the draft was in effect, people who hadn't commited a felony could opt forjoining the military to parlay their sentence.

Are you kidding me? In the army, we have enough young soldiers coming in that don't want to listen and can't run from here to there without falling on the ground crying that he can't make it. The Army has enough to deal with in Iraq and Afghanistan. Just not a good idea.

Because its not the Military's job to take the scum of the universe, they want people who are committed to an ideal, not a bunch of people who only care about themselves, the military is a team and has no room for anti-social misfits who lack and respect for discipline.

Im sorry but would you want the military to be full of or even have some criminals? These people will be trained to kill. Im sorry but this would be the worst solution ever.
