I'm not even religious. I mean I don't belong to a religion. Yet I can speak in tongues. It only happens when I'm in extreme pain. Then the pain goes away.

What is the whole thing about. I use to do it when I was a 10. My parents told me that it was evil.

Any religious people know what's it's about?

For all of you mean folks. Don't waste your time or my eyes having to read "Go to a psychiatrist. Or get help." Just don't post if you have something mean to say.Ok?

According to St. Paul, speaking in tongues is not to be discouraged: "Do not forbid speaking in tongues" (1 Cor 14:39). He wished those to whom he wrote "all spoke with tongues" (1 Cor 14:5) and claimed himself to speak with tongues more than all of the church at Corinth combined ("I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all" 1 Cor 14:18). Paul discouraged simultaneous speaking in tongues directed at people rather than God, lest unbelievers think the assembled brethren "mad" (1 Cor 14:23, 27). Tongues, Paul said, is speaking to God, rather than men, mysteries in the spirit (1 Cor 14:2), edifies the tongues-speaker (1 Cor 14:4), is the action of the praying of a person's spirit (1 Cor 14:14), and serves to bless God and give thanks (1 Cor 14:16-17). In 1 Cor 12:7-11 and 1 Cor 12:28-30. Paul indicated that not all Christians speak in tongues, although some churches interpret Paul to be talking about church meetings. There are many who believe that all believers have the ability to speak in tongues (Mark 16:16-17) as a form of prayer, based on 1 Cor 14:14, Eph 6:18 and Jude 20. Paul also refered to the prophecy of speaking in tongues written by Isaiah.
So, even though you say you are not a religious person, that does not mean that your gift isn't legitimate. (There is, by the way, a big difference between religiosity and spirituality. A person who is religious is not necessarily spiritual and vice versa. You might be a spiritual person in a more internal way...But I digress.)
The way I interpret your gift is that it is deeply rooted in your subconscious, in the spiritual part of you. And when you are suffering it is this part that takes over and it takes steps to bring about healing. In a sense, it is your body and soul's way of asking God for this healing.
I am fascinated with the idea of the gift of tongues, for I, like you, do not speak it for others to hear. It just comes out of me at the most random times, especially in times of distress or when I hear of other's struggles.
For me, I know it is a form of prayer, but I don't concern myself with why I say it. In the end, whatever was happening then (at the time when I would pray in tongues) would be resolved and miraculously things would end up better.
I think your parents were misguided in their view on your gift; perhaps they misjudged it out of fear that you might be teased or that it was just "gibberish". Whatever their reasons, I am sure they did not know what to do with you using your gift.
I think it is something to be proud of--use it for good!

Other theories besides the Christian speaking in tongues from receiving the Holy Spirit would be possible possession by an "evil" or aggressive spirit (no one can for sure whether or not these spirits are demons until there is more evidence) or remnants of a past life that you can't remember, among many other things. Try a psychic or a medium. This can help you determine the source of the problem. So sorry no one else is taking you seriously. As a paranormal investigator, this question is not outside of the norm for me. Hope this helps!

EDIT>>>I believe the asker said that she was not a religious person, and the speaking of tongues through the Holy Spirit that you are all referring to would happen during prayer, so that theory could not apply here. Please actually read the question and try to help her, not convert her.

First of all--don't listen to your parents. YOU ARE NOT EVIL!!!! That's just silly. My guess is it's the wiring in your brain. I know it sounds weird, but most people shout when in extreme pain, or say curses. I'm betting it's just a neurological twinge thing. I am religious--I am not a Christian, however, I remind you of something, if you are. The Bible says there will be no more signs, and there will be no more tongues. The last episode of tongues was after Jesus rose and they had the big dinner, so everyone could talk to each other. Don't let anyone tell you you're evil, and I am sorry that your parents are that close-minded. Tell them to please join us in the year 2007. I know it's a long jump from the 1600's, but I am sure they can make the leap.

*Sorry, that just really upsets me, that they would say that to you. Don't mind my ranting.

I'm serious about my Christianity, but I have to say I'm extremely skeptical about things like this.

If you're really speaking in tongues, what are you saying when you speak this way? If you're suggesting that you're speaking in tongues as was recorded on the day of Pentecost, then you'd be praising Jesus when you did this. The Holy Spirit, which would be what is responsible for your speaking this way, only and always points the way to Christ.

It doesn't sound like that's happening, from what you've indicated about your personal beliefs and the association with pain. Again, even if you were a devout Christian, I'd still be very skeptical of the idea of you speaking in tongues.

So I know you don't want to hear it, but to me, this is something else ... (I saw another poster suggest something like Tourretts Syndrome) ... that you ought to seek an explanation for in the medical or psychological arena.

Wow that's kinda cool in a spirtualisty way. However uh are you sure your "speaking in tongues" or just muttering nonsense? Well if you are sure then I sugguest you go on some type of spirtual journey. Maybe do some meditation. Heck even learn some new languages if you have a gift for it. I mean if you can speak languages you don't know then you should definitely learn a few languages. That could be like your secret talent. Then again I'm not super religious and I don't know you so I wouldn't know anything about this in general.

First of all, I agree with you when you say it is mean to say to someone "go to a psychiatrist or get help". It is MEAN and selfish. The moment a person has a unique ability, they are suddenly crazy. It never occurs to people that spirituality is real and does exist. Second, it is not evil. When humans behave in extraordinary ways (like the way you described), it is the spiritual manifesting itself in the physical realm through you. You HAVE to decode the message. In other words, translate what it is you said in tongues. Spirituality itself is considered evil in the world of psychiatry, by the way. You experienced what is a shamanic experience. It is when a human being can enter an alternate reality and receive messages from that reality to transform their lives as well as the lives of others in the physical reality. You are blessed by God to even have a unique ability. I'm jealous (but in a very good way). My advice: read books about the subject and join a shamanic community.

In the bible, speaking in tongues , was when god confused the languages, after the flood, at the tower of Babel, which was the first of an empire, that sinned against god,and was destroyed, because of their worship of false gods & idols. This is where all the races come from in the world. They were scattered across the earth. No one could understand one another, because they spoke in different tongues. Thru the centuries, religion made up that story. Fundementalists Religions.

What exactly do you mean by "tongues"?
If you're talking gibberish, then it's not "tongues" as described in the Bible.
"Tongues" in the Bible means having the "holy spirit" descend upon you while you're "witnessing" to people who do not speak your language, so that you may speak to them in theirs, even if you have never heard or learned the language. There was one purpose and one purpose only for "tongues", and that was to help spread "God's" word to people of other cultures. It has nothing to do with any self-oriented use.
The incoherent babbling you hear people doing has nothing to do with "speaking in tongues".
If you are doing that type of thing, then I don't know what could be causing it. I'm not trying to be mean when I say you might want to speak to your doctor about it. Especially if you feel that it's something out of your control. You also don't specify what you mean by "when I'm in extreme pain". Do you mean physical pain, like you fell down and broke your ankle, or emotional pain? This would be important to know to help you understand why you do this.

Speakin in tongues. Is like praying for exacting what you want but so the "enemy(the devil if you wanna call him that)" Cannot understand you consquently you can't understand yourself but you're acting out of faith that your pray will be understood and answered. And the reason it works for you is because you have faith that it will work, you've associated that its worked in the past, which builds your faith (in terms of that) even more. Its just like following principle almost. Like you know that if you plant a seed(properly) it will grow. You don't know why or how thats just how it works. Its kind of the same thing.

It's a symptom of a type of hysteria. You get into the right state of mind from pain. Religious people who do it work themselves into it. It's just nonsense syllables, without any hint of grammar.
