I don't get it. I'm reading the Harry Potter books right now: just getting through Chamber of Secrets. It's pretty darn good. J.K. Rowling's got a good imagination...way better than any of you skeptics who think Harry Potter worships Satan.
What's so bad about any of it? Yeah, one guy drinks unicorn's blood. Yeah, they make POTIONS, and use CAULDRONS, and all your stupid little "Satanic" red alerts. Any kid can tell the difference between fact and fiction. Any kid can find Harry Potter as much as a fairy tale or story. Anyone can find this harmless entertainment, and yet I don't see why some people find this so sinful.
I'm a Christian. I believe in God, so what's the big deal with the Harry Potter books? A few simplistic spell names, dark magic, ghosts and "oooh, look at the holy bible of Satan." Most people think that's true in my old true. Then again that's what they say about heavy metal. They're wrong.
I'm done on my soapbox. Go ahead. Gimme a valid answer.

"That stuff is BS. Harry Potter, Golden Compass, just read the damn things, they aren't going to turn you into a satanist or something, jeez. Its just a damn book."
Exactly. Isn't that pretty obvious!!

Also, the Golden Compass thing. They say it was written by a so called mad Athiest. I haven't seen the movie or read the book. But as far as I'm concerned, dueling polar bears aren't in the least bit Satanic.

"It's Satanic because there are fantastical animals, and pseudo-Latin spells that, no matter what the setting, are from Satan. And there is no absolutely no Jesus anywhere to be seen....Satanic!"
Hmm...I pray to yours and my God that you're joking. I pray our God you're joking.

These things about rape...hmm...could it be that these kids are what we call...hmm, what was it again...oh yeah...SICK?!!!
Look, not every kid is gonna become a Satan worshipper by reading Harry Potter. Maybe some will, but then again, those are the kids who'll grow up to become psychopathic freaks, and they will get what they deserve.
Maybe we should just let kids read the books for themselves instead of trying to plant the idea that they're Satanic into their minds. It does praise witches, and witches shouldn't be praised...but did you also noticed that...hmm, let's see...IT'S ON PAPER!!!! THAT IT'S JUST INK AND PAPER!!!!! THAT IT'S JUST WORDS ON A PIECE OF PAPER!!!! Did anyone notice that?! None of the "Satan worshipping" is even real. And this is logic.
Sure some stuff, well, when I read it, seemed gross, like Professor Quirrel drinking unicorn blood in the middle of a forest, but it's supposed to add the the story, not make you kill someone and drain them of their blood.

Oh and just read the link by the way. I think the people who wrote that were a LITTLE too serious. And like I said before, while going on what could've been the greatest thing I've ever typed, it's in the world of fiction. Why note EVERY subtext and every LITTLE reference and just...well, the smart thing to do is read through it as fiction. Quit looking it as a spiritual blasphemy and look at it as fiction. Because that's what it is. And I don't know what idiot in the right mind would bite the head off of a chicken or drink a horse's blood or try to conjure up spells, but, well, I'll see you at in the lethal injection chamber.

To suggest to any child that there is a way to escape the unhappy, real life world they live in and to retreat into a mystical fantasy world to find happiness is totally irresponsible and deceitful.
In other words, there is a real concern that young people will follow-up on this message and become actively involved in the occult to find refuge and spiritual satisfaction. Probably too because of being so emotionally involved with the characters they would not stop to ask, is there another and indeed better way.
A second concern is that much of what is said in the books is really pagan philosophy and quite anti-biblical. In The Sorcerer's Stone, Harry is told that there is no good and evil, only power. This also does not square up with evangelical Biblical truth. There we are shown that God is an absolute and has an absolute way. The teaching that there is only one power and that it can be manipulated for good or evil, is a widely held Eastern belief and is prevalent in occult and new age religions but not in evangelical Christianity.
Of course J.K.Rowling is entitled to bring this belief out in her books but it is disappointing that a children's book should be presenting such philosophies without any alternatives being shown.
Pretty sure you won't accept this answer, you come across as the person to shun everything that doesn't go across with your opinion.
I like the books and this is a valid answer, but no doubt you don't really give a ****.

I like Harry Potter, and I like reading them. I don't mind people who dislike them, but I still don't understand the concept of why people think it is 'santanic'. I understand in certain religions witchcraft, spells, potions, and other such things is counted as wrong. However, the book is pure imagination and if you took time to read it you can really see the way it is sort of links to some of the teaching we want to teach our children. If you get past the so called 'santanic' views the story actually teaches some really important things. "A mother's love for her child so strong, great ever lasting friendships..." and there's much more. I mean, if you ever get a chance to read it all with a open mind and not be so ignorant you migh acutally like it! If you don't want small kids reading it... then wait until they're older to give it to them. Either way kids will be exposed to 'bad' stuff as they get older... and Harry Potter is anything but bad.

You seem so non-chalant when you say "spell names, dark magic, ghosts" and you say kids can tell the difference between fact and fiction? Is that so? Then why is it we have to see in the news about 9-11 year old boys raping a 7 year old girl? Typically, kids don't know the first thing about sex at that age, so these ones must have seen it somewhere and wanted to make it their own reality. There are many kids out there that don't have ANY supervision or guidance from either parent, let alone one that teaches morals or values, etc. So, as a "Christian" you ought to know that. More importantly, you surely can understand the concept from God's point of view from the Bible where it says:"What sharing does light have with darkness?" 2Cor.6:14
If you seriously want to see how spiritually dangerous these books can be, especially to kids, then look at these articles:
http://www.cuttingedge.org/news/hpmain.html
Wow, you missed the point entirely! Who HAS ever implied that kids would become Satanic, ritualistic, serial killers from reading these books? The point is children's minds are very influenced and shape-able. You obviously didn't bother to READ the actual articles, because you would have seen the distinct and deliberate use of witchcraft symbols, names, spells, etc. that Rowling uses to write her stories. and the dangerous part is that there is a good vs evil theme to it, and when a child reads and gets so engrossed in a story where the "good" guy, (Potter?) is using methods that go AGAINST God's commandments to NOT do this: "There should not be found in you anyone who employs divination, a praticer of magic or anyone who looks for omens or a sorcerer, or one who binds others with a spell or anyone who consults a spirit medium or a professional foreteller of events or anyone who inquires of the dead. For everybody doing these things is something detestable to God" Deut 18:10-12
Childrens minds are like sponges, and if you can't see how they are definitely influenced by the things they read, or see on TV, or the people around them, then I think you are blind, but only because you choose to be.

They can't stand witches being portrayed in a good light. After all, they are not supposed to suffer a witch to live. Now here's one who's a hero, never once prays to Jesus, relies on himself, and comes out all right.
I have a devout Christian friend who looked very disappointed when I told him I'd seen the Golden Compass. So the church symbol is the bad guys in the story there; not for the first, or last, time in a story. It's much more about individualism and thinking for oneself, a 'flaw' similar to Harry Potter's crimes. I highly recommend it.

Nothing. I know, aren't the novels excellent? I've read the series through three times now and just restarted the Philosophers Stone. The books are excellent, well written and entertaining. I never once thought about religion when I was reading them, they're just good entertainment.
I wish more Christians had the guts to do what you're doing and actually read the bloody books.

Well read what you're saying. Some people are more threatened by it than others. "Potions", "withches" "speaking in tounge" it's a threat towards many religious people who take it very seriously. Just like other things like Halloween. I for one love Harry Potter it gives an eriee feeling toward it.
