Yes I think this is definitely a great quote because it is an important message for people that want to redo all sorts of mistakes they made in the past. If they followed this quote, they would realize that what happened to them in the past or what they did in the past doesn't matter at all because it only matters how they are like now in the present.

The past is a part of who we are. We all have regrets about certain things in our past, certain indiscretions. Those indiscretions do not necessarily define who we are today.

yes our past plays a big part..
parts of our past is who we are, we just regret our mistakes afterwards and just do not accept or believe that we did such a thing or mistake..now that were different

I think I know what the author is intending to say, but it is poorly written. I might instead say:
"A person's past has a place in his life, but it is not always indicative of who he is to become."
